Taboo (2017)

Plunge into the grimy heart of 1814 London with Taboo, a dark, brooding beast of a series that’s as intoxicating as it is unsettling. Tom Hardy, also co-creator, embodies James Delaney, a presumed-dead adventurer who slinks back from Africa to claim his father’s murky inheritance. Hardy’s performance is a masterclass in menace—his gravelly growls and haunted stares make Delaney a magnetic enigma, teetering between savior and savage. The East India Company, led by Jonathan Pryce’s calculating Sir Stuart Strange, wants his land and his soul, while a web of family secrets, betrayal, and occult whispers tightens around him.
The visuals ooze atmosphere: fog-choked docks, candlelit conspiracies, and blood-soaked rituals that feel ripped from a gothic nightmare. Steven Knight’s writing blends historical grit with supernatural chills, crafting a slow-burn tale of revenge and redemption. Jessie Buckley’s fierce Lorna and Oona Chaplin’s tragic Zilpha add emotional heft, though the pacing can drag in its dense plotting. Every frame drips with ambition—mud, gunpowder, and forbidden deals fueling a world where no one’s clean.
Taboo isn’t for the faint-hearted; it’s a raw, hypnotic descent into power and pain. If you crave dark drama with bite, this is your poison.
