The Secret Behind Her Marriage

The Secret Behind Her Marriage

Emily stood frozen as Richard Carter’s voice echoed through the cabin.

“Open the door! Our agreement is finished!”

Jackson positioned himself between Emily and the entrance.

“Whatever happens,” he whispered, “don’t believe a word he says.”

Richard entered with two armed men, smiling as though visiting an old friend.

“Emily, darling. It’s time to come home.”

“You sold me,” she replied.

Richard laughed. “I saved you.”

Jackson placed the hidden letter on the table.

“Tell her about the railroad money, Richard.”

Her father’s smile disappeared.

Twenty years earlier, Richard had stolen thousands of dollars from a railroad partnership. Jackson’s brother, Thomas, discovered the fraud and threatened to expose him.

Days later, Thomas was found dead.

Jackson had spent years being blamed for his brother’s death.

Emily stared at her father.

“You killed him?”

Richard’s silence answered her.

Jackson continued. “Your father arranged this marriage because he believed I possessed documents proving his crimes. He wanted you inside my home to find them.”

Emily felt sick.

Her father hadn’t sacrificed her merely to pay debts.

He had used her to destroy the man who could expose him.

“Then why did you marry me?” she whispered to Jackson.

His voice softened.

“Because I knew what your father intended. And because I couldn’t leave you in his hands.”

Richard suddenly drew a pistol.

“Enough!”

A gunshot shattered the silence.

Emily screamed.

Jackson staggered backward, clutching his shoulder.

But before Richard could fire again, Emily grabbed the heavy iron poker beside the fireplace and struck his wrist.

The pistol hit the floor.

Jackson’s ranch hands, alerted by the shot, rushed through the back entrance and restrained Richard’s accomplices.

By sunset, Richard Carter was bound for the sheriff’s office.

Emily knelt beside Jackson, pressing a clean cloth against his wounded shoulder.

“You could have told me everything.”

“I was afraid you’d think I married you for revenge.”

“And did you?”

Jackson looked into her eyes.

“No. I married you because you deserved a chance to be free.”

Tears slipped down Emily’s cheeks.

For the first time in her life, someone had chosen her without asking for anything in return.

But that night, while cleaning Jackson’s wound, Emily noticed a small envelope sewn inside his coat.

On the front was written:

For Emily Carter. To be opened only after Richard Carter is arrested.

Inside was a photograph of a woman holding a newborn baby.

The woman looked exactly like Emily.

Beneath the photograph were five words:

“Richard Carter is not your father.”

And suddenly, Emily understood that the greatest secret of her life
