THE DEED OF THE ANCESTORS

THE DEED OF THE ANCESTORS

Two hours later, while Arthur was still seething in his study, the heavy wooden door opened again. Elena stepped back into the room. She was no longer wearing her apron, and her expression was remarkably firm. Arthur rose from his leather chair, demanding to know why she had returned after being dismissed.

Instead of arguing, Elena walked slowly toward the center of the room and placed a yellowed, fragile piece of parchment directly onto the mahogany table. Arthur glanced down, expecting to see the missing modern files he had accused her of taking. Instead, his eyes fell upon an authentic land grant bearing an official state seal and hand-signed signature from the mid-nineteenth century.

The document was an original land deed issued to Elena’s great-grandfather decades before Arthur’s grandfather had ever arrived in the valley. It clearly delineated the boundaries of the entire basin—including the exact parcels upon which the main house, pastures, and water wells of Oak Creek Ranch stood. Elena quietly explained that her family had kept the original title safe for generations, never enforcing their claim while the land was respected. However, after reviewing the true historical boundaries alongside the records, it was clear that the purchase made by Arthur’s family decades prior was based on an invalid survey.

Arthur stood frozen behind his desk, staring in complete disbelief at the historic document resting on the polished wood. The maid he had dismissed without cause held the undeniable legal foundation of the entire estate, instantly transforming his position of power into one of total vulnerability.
