PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE DEBT

PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE DEBT
The journey to Thorn Ridge took two days. Maren rode silently, wrapped in Everett’s spare blanket, while he watched the trail for signs of pursuit.

His cabin stood beneath towering pines, surrounded by snow-covered peaks. It was rough, isolated, and painfully quiet.

Maren immediately began making herself useful. She repaired his torn shirts, prepared supper, and organized supplies without being asked.

But Everett noticed something strange. Every evening, she sat beside the window, staring toward the distant valley as though expecting someone.

On the fourth morning, three riders appeared below the ridge.

Aldous had found them.

Everett reached for his rifle, but Maren stepped forward.

“Wait. There’s something you need to know.”

She pulled a folded document from beneath her dress. It was her husband’s original land deed, bearing an official seal.

“The two hundred dollars was never a debt,” she whispered. “My husband discovered Aldous had been stealing land from widows and poor settlers. He forged that loan to force me off our property.”

Everett examined the papers. Suddenly, everything made sense.

Aldous wasn’t chasing a helpless widow. He was chasing evidence that could destroy him.

The riders approached the cabin. Everett stood on the porch, rifle ready, while Maren held the deed tightly.

But this time, she wasn’t hiding behind him.

When Aldous dismounted, Everett spoke calmly.

“You came a long way to collect a debt that never existed.”

Maren stepped into the sunlight and raised the document.

“And now the whole town will know why.”

For the first time, Aldous looked afraid.

Everett had gone to Colton’s Ferry for salt and flour. He had returned with something he never expected to find: a reason to stop living alone.

And Maren had finally found a place where no one could sell her future.
