PART 2: THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

PART 2: THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING
Three days passed, and Maggie slowly regained her strength. For the first time in years, she slept without expecting someone to drag her from her bed.
Caleb noticed small changes. She began eating without fear, sitting beside the window, and even smiling when Bishop nudged his nose against her shoulder.
One afternoon, she found an old photograph of Eleanor on the mantel.
“Was she your wife?”
Caleb nodded.
“She loved flowers. I stopped planting them after she died.”
Maggie looked toward the empty garden.
“Maybe flowers aren’t meant to remember the dead. Maybe they’re meant to remind the living that spring can return.”
Her words stayed with him.
The following morning, Caleb discovered fresh horse tracks near the northern fence. Someone had been watching the property.
That evening, Maggie finally confessed another secret. Before escaping Greer’s boarding house, she had stolen a small leather ledger containing names, payments, and evidence of the powerful men financing his operation.
Greer wasn’t merely exploiting helpless women. He was protecting a criminal network that reached far beyond Montana.
And one of the names inside that ledger belonged to a respected local businessman.
Before Caleb could respond, three horses appeared on the road.
Greer had arrived.
He stepped down from his saddle, smiling as though he owned the ranch.
“Dawson, you’ve been keeping something that belongs to me.”
Caleb stood in the doorway, his rifle resting firmly in his hands.
“She doesn’t belong to anybody.”
Greer’s smile disappeared.
“Hand her over, or you’ll lose everything.”
Behind Caleb, Maggie trembled. But this time, she didn’t hide beneath a blanket or beg to die.
She stepped forward, holding the leather ledger.
“No,” she said firmly. “This time, everyone will know what you did.”
Caleb glanced at her, realizing that the frightened woman he had rescued was finally ready to fight.
But Greer only laughed.
“You really think that little book can save you?”
Then he raised his hand.
Beyond the road, more riders emerged from the dust.
The fight for Maggie’s freedom had only just begun.
