Miracle Baby “Callan the Great” Defies the Odds After Arriving 17 Weeks Early

A tiny baby girl from Alabama is inspiring thousands after surviving an incredibly challenging start to life — a journey her parents lovingly describe as nothing short of a miracle.

Jared and CJ Gore of Birmingham were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child. Like many new parents, they were excitedly counting down the weeks until their baby’s due date of April 12, 2026. At the time, CJ was just 23 weeks into her pregnancy and expected many more weeks of development before their daughter would arrive.

But in mid-December 2025, their world changed suddenly.

Doctors discovered that CJ’s placenta had grown to nearly three times its typical size. Shortly afterward, she was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome, a rare and serious pregnancy complication that can put both mother and baby in immediate danger. The condition affects the blood and liver and can escalate quickly, leaving doctors little time to act.

Medical staff at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital in Homewood, Alabama told the couple that an emergency C-section was the safest option. The situation was extremely delicate. Because the pregnancy was still so early, doctors explained that the newborn might only be able to stay with them for a very short time after birth.

Still, the medical team prepared to do everything possible.

On December 16, 2025, their daughter Callan entered the world at just 23 weeks and one day into the pregnancy — nearly four months earlier than expected.

She weighed only 11 ounces, making her the smallest baby ever delivered at the hospital.

To put that into perspective, many premature babies weigh around a pound at birth. Callan weighed five ounces less than that.

Immediately after delivery, the tiny newborn was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where specialists began providing the delicate care she needed.

Doctors today can do incredible things for premature babies, but a baby born this early and this small still faces enormous challenges. The medical team remained cautious while monitoring Callan closely.

Yet from the very beginning, Callan showed remarkable determination.

Hour after hour passed.

Then days.

Soon, the tiny fighter had made it through her first week.

According to her father, even the doctors were amazed.

“The doctors couldn’t really explain how Callan survived,” Jared shared.

Now, nearly three months later, the little girl her family affectionately calls “Callan the Great” continues to grow stronger.

She still remains in the NICU, but her progress has been encouraging.

Callan now weighs 2 pounds and 11 ounces and measures more than 14 inches long — an incredible change from the tiny newborn who first arrived in December.

While she still requires specialized care, she has already reached an important milestone: she is no longer using a ventilator. Instead, she continues receiving nutrition through a feeding tube as doctors monitor her growth and development.

Her parents say every small step forward feels like a victory.

Callan will also undergo an important eye exam soon. Premature babies often face vision challenges because their eyes are still developing when they arrive so early. Doctors regularly monitor these conditions to help protect their long-term sight.

Despite the uncertainties ahead, Jared and CJ say they remain deeply grateful.

CJ herself also faced serious health risks when HELLP syndrome was discovered, making the outcome even more meaningful for the family.

“We believe it’s a miracle from God that both Callan and CJ are still here,” Jared said.

As Callan approaches the milestone of three months old, her journey continues to inspire not only her family but also the medical team caring for her.
