Baby girl only 14 days old diagnosed with cancer, mother blames herself for doing something bad during pregnancy

Annaleise Sisneros was born in New Mexico, USA, in August 2017, weighing 3.1 kg. Just two weeks after birth, she underwent numerous treatments for a serious illness. Doctors diagnosed her with a rare blood condition at birth.
One of Annaleise’s symptoms that raised concern was a rash. Initially, doctors thought it was an allergy. However, blood tests revealed she had a serious medical condition affecting her blood.
Her mother, Brandy Sisneros, shared: “We think she had it while she was still in the womb, because she had swollen lymph nodes at birth, so I guess she had it during my pregnancy. The doctors don’t know why she got it. Nobody knows why, it just happened unexpectedly.”

Brandy added that she blamed herself when she discovered her daughter’s condition: “It must be because of some chemicals I used. When you’re pregnant, whatever you’re exposed to, your baby is exposed to it too.”
Brandy Sisneros gave birth naturally, and at birth, Annaleise showed no obvious signs of illness. However, she gradually noticed small spots and lumps on the baby’s skin. Five days later, the little girl developed blisters that looked like chickenpox. These spots were dark purple. And then more and more spots appeared under and on the skin’s surface. Eventually, doctors had to begin intensive treatment, a process that caused her and her family a great deal of hardship. At one point, she almost required surgery on her toes and feet because of the side effects of the treatment. Annaleise also lost all her hair.
Fortunately, now at nine months old, Annaleise’s condition has improved and her health is gradually recovering. Brandy shared: “She’s home, and we’re all so proud of her. During treatment, the doctors had to give her medication to ease her discomfort. She was also too weak to drink from a bottle. Just looking at her shows how much the treatment affected her. But even during those difficult times, she didn’t cry. She truly is a little warrior.”

Childhood Health Conditions: Is it something to worry about?
Serious childhood illnesses are relatively rare, and Annaleise’s case is even rarer. The worrying thing is that parents don’t always know if their child is affected, as no research has yet found the exact cause in many cases.
However, parents should be aware of factors that can contribute to such conditions:
- Exposure to radiation. Radiation exposure has been linked to some childhood health conditions, although more research is needed.
- Hereditary factors. Children can inherit gene changes from their parents, which may lead to health issues.
- Sometimes, children can develop conditions spontaneously due to changes in how cells grow and function in the body.
Whatever the cause, it’s important for parents to consult a doctor if they think their child has a health problem. Being careful when it comes to a child’s health is always a good idea.
