THE MASK 3 (2026)
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Action
Starring: Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, Jeff Daniels, and new cast members: Tessa Thompson, John Boyega, and Benedict Cumberbatch

Plot:

The Mask 3 is a vibrant, high-energy continuation of the beloved Mask series, where humor, chaos, and cartoonish antics collide once again. After the events of The Mask 2 (which follows a different protagonist), Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) returns to reclaim his role as the hapless everyman who stumbles upon the mystical and magical green mask that transforms him into a chaotic, larger-than-life character.

The film begins with Stanley now leading a quiet life in Edge City. After the madness of his time as The Mask in the first film, Stanley has learned to keep his head low and avoid drawing attention. However, Stanley’s life takes an unexpected turn when a new threat emerges—The Mask itself.

The ancient powers of the mask are tied to a mysterious, secret society, The Brotherhood of the Green Veil, who have been guarding the mask’s powers for centuries. They’re looking to reclaim the mask and its powers for their own twisted purposes. Their leader, Magnus Grendel (Benedict Cumberbatch), is a cunning mastermind with a personal vendetta against Stanley, and he believes the mask rightfully belongs to him. To stop this new villainous force, Stanley must once again put on the mask—but this time, the stakes are much higher.

As Stanley transforms into the unpredictable, comical Mask once again, he realizes that the mask has evolved. The mask’s powers are becoming more dangerous and uncontrollable, and he’s not the only one who can wield them. Tessa Thompson plays Maya, a brilliant and determined archaeologist who uncovers the mask’s true origins and becomes an unexpected ally to Stanley. She believes the mask can unlock not just chaos, but the potential for destruction of the very fabric of reality itself. But what Stanley doesn’t realize is that the mask is also calling to someone else: Dax (John Boyega), a street-smart trickster who finds the mask’s allure irresistible and is also bent on wielding its power.

Caught between Grendel, who seeks to use the mask’s power for nefarious purposes, and Dax, who sees it as a tool for personal gain, Stanley finds himself struggling to control the mask’s unpredictable nature. The boundaries between reality and the cartoonish mayhem the mask induces begin to blur, and soon, Stanley is forced to question whether he can control the powers within the mask or if they will take over him once and for all.

As the battle for the mask escalates, Stanley is thrust into wild, action-packed sequences filled with exaggerated stunts, shape-shifting transformations, and high-speed chases. The film culminates in an epic showdown where Stanley must outwit his enemies, confront his own insecurities, and, most importantly, decide whether he’s truly ready to give up the chaotic, hilarious power of The Mask once and for all.

Themes & Tone:

The Mask 3 explores themes of power, responsibility, and identity. Stanley’s internal struggle with the mask highlights the dangers of seeking power without control, and the balance between chaos and order. The sequel brings a deeper exploration of the mask’s origins and its connection to ancient powers and hidden societies. The idea of identity is also central, as Stanley grapples with who he truly is—both as a mild-mannered man and as the zany, unpredictable Mask.

The tone of the film retains the irreverent, slapstick comedy that made the first Mask so memorable. Expect wild, over-the-top sequences, exaggerated animations, and surreal moments that play with the boundaries of reality. The film blends action, comedy, and fantasy in a way that makes it accessible to fans of the original, while also offering a fresh and exciting new adventure. The tone will be light-hearted and fun, but with an underlying sense of danger as the mask’s powers spiral out of control.

New Characters:

  • Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey): The same lovable, goofy, and underdog character from the original Mask returns. Stanley has changed, having learned to live a more peaceful life after his wild adventures. However, once again, he must face the consequences of the chaotic and unpredictable power of The Mask. Jim Carrey’s return to the role brings back his trademark physical comedy and zany antics, combining nostalgia with a new level of depth to the character.

  • Magnus Grendel (Benedict Cumberbatch): The new antagonist of the film, Magnus is a sophisticated and calculating villain who believes the mask is his birthright. Cunning, ruthless, and manipulative, Grendel wants to use the mask’s powers to rewrite reality to suit his own vision. Cumberbatch’s portrayal adds a layer of complexity and gravitas to the villain, making him a worthy adversary to Stanley’s chaotic alter-ego.

  • Maya (Tessa Thompson): An archaeologist and historian who uncovers the secrets of the mask and is determined to stop those who wish to abuse its powers. Her intellect and bravery make her a key ally to Stanley, and her no-nonsense approach offers a grounding force amidst all the madness. Thompson’s dynamic with Carrey adds a touch of sincerity and humor to the story.

  • Dax (John Boyega): A charming street hustler who, after encountering the mask, decides that he’s going to use it for his own personal gain. Dax’s reckless nature and desire for power make him a dangerous wildcard in the battle for control of the mask. Boyega’s portrayal brings a layer of youthful energy and swagger to the character, adding humor and tension to the story.

  • Jeff Daniels (Return as Charlie Schumaker): Stanley’s loyal best friend returns, this time finding himself unwittingly caught up in the new mess that The Mask has created. His deadpan humor and attempts to help Stanley navigate the chaos provide some of the film’s best comedic moments.

Direction & Visuals:

Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (known for Red Notice and Central Intelligence), The Mask 3 will balance the nostalgic, over-the-top slapstick humor of the original with modern, visually stunning action sequences. Expect plenty of surreal, cartoonish moments reminiscent of the original, along with high-energy stunts, outrageous transformations, and comedic sequences that push the boundaries of physics.

The film will also incorporate modern visual effects, bringing the mask’s powers into an even more visually stunning light. From shape-shifting forms to animated chaos, the creative team will blend traditional practical effects with cutting-edge CGI to create a world where the line between reality and imagination is constantly shifting.
