Child 44 (2015) is a gritty and atmospheric psychological thriller set in Stalinist Soviet Russia, where a disillusioned military officer uncovers a series of shocking murders that challenge the very nature of justice, loyalty, and morality. Based on the novel by Tom Rob Smith, this film is a haunting exploration of a totalitarian regime’s dark secrets and the terrifying depths to which a man must descend to confront them.

Plot:
Set in 1953, Child 44 follows Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy), a loyal Soviet MGB officer tasked with investigating and rooting out enemies of the state. Leo is a man bound by the strict laws of the Soviet Union, where personal freedoms are limited, and paranoia is the ruling force. His world is turned upside down when he stumbles upon a case involving a series of child murders, which are dismissed by the authorities as “accidents” or “isolated incidents” β€” despite the growing number of victims.

When Leo begins to question the official story, he becomes a target of the very government he serves. His wife, Raisa (Noomi Rapace), is also caught in the crossfire as the regime starts to see them both as threats. As the investigation leads him deeper into a web of lies, corruption, and murder, Leo must confront his own beliefs and loyalties. The deeper he goes, the more he realizes that he is not just hunting a killer, but facing the monstrous nature of a system that is willing to turn a blind eye to the most horrific crimes.

As Leo allies himself with Viktor Shulgin (Gary Oldman), an old friend and former colleague, he begins to unravel a chilling conspiracy that not only puts his life at risk but the future of the country itself. The film builds to a tense and unpredictable climax, where loyalty and justice collide in the most unexpected of ways.

Themes:
Child 44 is a film that explores the nature of power, fear, and blind loyalty under a totalitarian regime. The film questions the cost of political ideology and the lengths people will go to preserve the “greater good,” even when it means sacrificing innocence. The story also touches on the personal struggles of the characters, particularly Leo, who must choose between his duty to the state and his moral obligation to protect the innocent.
