SHE WOULDNโ€™T GAIN WEIGHT โ€” THEN CAME THE ๐š‚๐™ท๐™พ๐™ฒ๐™บ: GRACE WAS LIVING WITH PDA & AVSD, FIGHTING BACK WITH A SMILE

When baby Grace was born, doctors reassured her parents that she was healthy and well. After routine checks, she was discharged from hospital at just two days old, and her family believed they were bringing home a perfectly healthy little girl.

But nine months later, their world changed completely.

Despite being a happy, social baby with a huge personality, Graceโ€™s mum, Georgina, couldnโ€™t ignore the feeling that something wasnโ€™t right. Grace sweated excessively, even in light clothing, and her tiny body was often clammy and mottled.

Friends and family tried to reassure her.

โ€œMaybe sheโ€™s just a warm baby,โ€ they said.

At the time, doctors could not hear anything abnormal with her heart, so Georgina tried to believe everything was fine. But another worrying sign soon appeared โ€” Grace stopped gaining weight.

The little girl had a huge appetite and loved food, yet week after week, the numbers on the scale barely changed. Despite working closely with dietitians, adding extra calories, and trying every suggestion possible, Grace continued losing weight.

โ€œI remember falling to the floor crying at one appointment,โ€ Georgina shared. โ€œI kept asking myself, โ€˜What am I doing wrong?โ€™โ€

As the months passed, the fear became overwhelming.

Finally, during a pediatric appointment, a consultant listened carefully to Graceโ€™s chest and heard a heart murmur. Within moments, another specialist was called in to perform an emergency scan.

That was the moment everything changed.

Doctors discovered that Grace had a complete atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) โ€” serious heart conditions that had already caused high pressure in her lungs and enlargement of her heart.

Her family was told that Grace was in heart failure.

โ€œWe were shocked,โ€ her parents said. โ€œShe was still smiling through everything. We had no idea how hard her little body was fighting every single day.โ€

Grace was immediately transferred to Birmingham Childrenโ€™s Hospital, where doctors explained the seriousness of her condition. Just five days later, she underwent open-heart surgery.

For her parents, those hours felt endless.

Nothing could prepare them for seeing their daughter surrounded by tubes, wires, and machines in intensive care after surgery. But even then, Grace continued to show incredible strength.

Doctors expected her to remain in ICU for several days, yet she recovered faster than anyone expected and was moved out within a day.

โ€œAll we wanted was to see her smile again,โ€ Georgina said. โ€œThe moment she smiled, we knew our little girl was still fighting.โ€

Today, Grace is back home enjoying life with her siblings, family, and friends. She has more energy, her weight has improved, and her joyful personality shines brighter than ever.

Although she will need further monitoring and likely more surgery in the future due to a leaking heart valve, her family remains deeply grateful for every doctor, nurse, and specialist who helped save her life.

โ€œGrace has been through more than most people could imagine,โ€ her parents shared. โ€œBut she never stopped smiling. She reminds us every day how precious life truly is.โ€
