MUM’S HEARTBREAK AS LITTLE BOY BORN WITH BULGING EYES AND BLINDNESS STILL HAS NO DIAGNOSIS

A young mum says she is desperately searching for answers after her baby son was born with a series of rare medical complications that doctors still cannot fully explain.

Little Kobi-Jai Morgan entered the world in March facing immediate health challenges. Shortly after birth, the newborn was rushed into intensive care where he was placed on ventilation and given a feeding tube.

Doctors discovered Kobi had a large hole in his heart, a floppy larynx affecting his breathing, and severe bruising around his eyes, which he was unable to open.

After six difficult weeks in hospital, specialists confirmed another devastating reality for the family — Kobi’s eyes had not fully developed, leaving him blind.

Now aged one, the youngster continues to live with the effects of the condition, which causes his eyes to bulge outward and remain extremely sensitive to light.

His mother, Morgan Nottingham, 24, says she can tell the condition causes him discomfort every day.

“He scratches at his eyes and pushes his eyelids upward,” she explained. “You can see he gets irritated and uncomfortable.”

To help manage the condition, Kobi requires four different types of eye drops daily and wears specially made transparent glasses developed through Cardiff University.

Despite traveling across the UK searching for answers, the family still does not have a clear diagnosis.

Trips to specialists, private consultations, and visits to hospitals including Great Ormond Street Hospital in London have so far failed to identify exactly what condition Kobi has.

“There has to be someone out there who knows something,” Morgan said.

The young mother admitted becoming a parent at 22 was already overwhelming, but raising a child with complex medical needs brought challenges she never imagined.

“No-one prepares you for this,” she said. “But whatever life throws at Kobi, he just keeps pushing through it.”

Although the family has slowly come to terms with the possibility that Kobi may never regain his vision, Morgan worries about how other children may react to him as he grows older.

“We already get stares,” she shared. “Children sometimes point at him and say he looks scary. That breaks my heart because he’s the sweetest little boy.”

The family says the lack of local support has made the journey even harder. According to Morgan, there are currently no nearby blind support centres, sensory classes, or specialist schools close to their home in Swansea, Wales.

Still, despite the uncertainty surrounding Kobi’s condition, his family remains determined to keep fighting for answers and greater awareness.

“We want people to understand children like Kobi,” Morgan said. “We also want other parents going through something similar to know they are not alone.”

In hopes of finally finding a diagnosis and additional specialist care, the family has now launched a fundraiser to help continue Kobi’s medical journey.

And while doctors may still not fully understand his condition, those closest to him say one thing remains certain:

Little Kobi continues to face every challenge with a quiet strength that inspires everyone around him.
