Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)

Aang (Gordon Cormier, wide-eyed wonder wrapped in airbender robes) bursts from his iceberg tomb into a world scorched by the Fire Nation’s iron fist—think Star Wars epic meets elemental ballet, but live and breathing. Joined by fierce waterbender Katara (Kiawentiio, channeling quiet storm) and her boomerang-slinging brother Sokka (Ian Ousley, sarcasm sharpened to a spear-tip), our bald hero dodges Prince Zuko’s (Dallas Liu, brooding blaze of rage) relentless pursuit, all while Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, tea-sipping wisdom in human form) brews more than just jasmine.
Albert Kim’s Netflix glow-up crams Book One’s sprawling saga into eight taut hours: bending battles erupt in CGI symphonies of flame whips and tidal takedowns, world-building pops with diverse casts and hybrid beasts that leap off the page. Sure, the humor’s dialed back for a grittier vibe—less Appa-fart gags, more genocide flashbacks—and pacing rushes like a comet chase, but the heart endures: themes of balance, loss, and found family hit with the force of a rockslide.
Stream all eight on Netflix now—flawed fire, but a worthy reignition for new benders.
