DOCTORS SAID IT WAS JUST PREGNANCY BUT POPPY WAS ACTUALLY LIVING WITH A RARE EWING SARCOMA

What began as persistent headaches during pregnancy soon became a life-changing journey for one young mother after doctors discovered she was living with a rare form of cancer.
Poppy was 34 weeks pregnant when she finally received an answer she had been desperately searching for. Although the diagnosis was devastating, she says it also brought an unexpected sense of relief after weeks of feeling that her concerns were being dismissed.

“As strange as it sounds, it was such a relief when I was diagnosed,” Poppy recalled. “I had to fight to get someone to believe me. At 34 weeks pregnant, I felt like I was being a nuisance. Knowing there was a reason for everything I was experiencing made me realize I wasn’t imagining it.”
Her symptoms first appeared several months earlier with severe headaches unlike anything she had experienced before. Soon afterward, she noticed a lump on her jaw.

Believing it was related to a wisdom tooth, she had the tooth removed and assumed the problem had been solved.
But the symptoms continued.
Poppy began experiencing frequent nosebleeds, overwhelming fatigue and persistent headaches. Because she was pregnant, she was repeatedly told these were common pregnancy-related changes.

Then she noticed a small spot inside her nose.
Over time, it continued to grow until it partially blocked her airway. Doctors initially struggled to determine what it was, but a biopsy eventually revealed the cause: atypical Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

The diagnosis marked the beginning of an intense period of treatment, but it also introduced Poppy to a community that would help her through some of the most difficult days of her life.
She credits Youth Support Coordinator Ella and Nurse Sam from Teenage Cancer Trust for helping her regain confidence when she felt overwhelmed.

“At first, I couldn’t even accept my own diagnosis,” she said. “I couldn’t listen to anyone else’s story because I was still trying to understand my own. I didn’t even want to leave my room unless my mum or my partner was with me.”
Little by little, things began to change.

A social evening organized by the charity encouraged her to step outside her room for the first time, where she met other young people facing similar challenges.
“I was amazed by how they kept living their lives,” she said. “Seeing their strength gave me hope that I could find mine too.”

Looking back, Poppy says there is never a right time to face a serious illness, but she remains deeply grateful for the support she received throughout her treatment.
“There’s no good time for something like this,” she said. “But being cared for in a Teenage Cancer Trust unit made such a difference. The support I received was incredible, and I’ll always be thankful for the people who helped me through it.”
