A mother has opened up about the emotional journey of her baby daughter Eva, after doctors discovered before birth that she had an omphalocele and her liver was positioned differently.

At the first scans, the family was told about the condition and faced difficult conversations about Eva’s future. But they chose to continue the pregnancy, preparing themselves for the surgeries their little girl might need.

Then, during the Caesarean delivery, another unexpected discovery left Eva’s mother overwhelmed.

Doctors told her that her daughter also had abnormalities affecting her arm, including fused fingers and missing fingers.

“I felt like the world stopped for a moment,” her mother recalled. “I had spent the pregnancy preparing for one challenge, and suddenly we were facing something completely different.”

Eva was taken to intensive care shortly after birth, while her mother remained in hospital unable to see her baby. During those first days, she watched other mothers hold and bond with their newborns while she could only wait for news about her daughter.

Eva underwent surgery to treat the omphalocele, and the procedure was successful. Her mother was then told that Eva would need to avoid lying on her tummy until she was around six months old.

“At that moment, it sounded less like medical advice and more like someone had already decided what my daughter would never be able to do,” she said.

Two weeks later, she finally got to meet her baby.

Eva was still there — small, strong and continuing to grow despite everything she had already been through.

Today, at just three-and-a-half months old, Eva has undergone two surgeries related to her omphalocele and has now reached another precious milestone: she can lie on her tummy.

Her family is also preparing for future surgeries to help address the differences in her hands and arms.

“We don’t know exactly what the future will look like, and of course we still have fears,” her mother said. “But Eva is not a list of limitations. She is our daughter, and every new thing she does reminds us how much she is capable of.”

For her mother, the journey has completely changed the way she sees the word “possibility.”

“I have never regretted choosing my daughter — not for a single second,” she said. “Children are so much more than a diagnosis. They deserve the chance to show us what they can do.”
