If they continued the pregnancy, their two baby boys could continue growing and developing well before birth, but their baby girl could face a serious risk of not making it.

With the other choice — delivering all three babies at 28 weeks — all three could face major challenges, but it would give their daughter a chance to survive.

Parents would do anything to keep their children safe. But what happens when they have to put one child’s safety ahead of the others? It may be every parent’s worst nightmare, but that was exactly what this couple had to face.

Chloe Dunstan and her husband, Rohan, were already parents to three boys: Evan, 3, Otto, 2, and Felix, 1. However, the couple dreamed of having one more child to make their family even bigger. Then Chloe became pregnant again. This time, their happiness multiplied when she discovered she wasn’t expecting just one baby — she was carrying triplets.

But their joy did not last long. During a routine pregnancy check-up, Chloe received worrying news. According to doctors, the two boys, Henry and Rufus, were developing well, but their baby sister Pearl was facing a much more difficult situation. The boys were receiving more of the oxygen and nutrients, leaving Pearl with serious health concerns.

At that point, the couple faced two heartbreaking choices: continue the pregnancy, knowing their daughter might not make it, or deliver all three babies much earlier than expected — a decision that could put all three children in a difficult situation.

Chloe didn’t know what to do. If they continued the pregnancy, Henry and Rufus could keep growing and developing well before birth. But the concern was that Pearl might not make it to delivery. The other option was to deliver the babies at 28 weeks, giving Pearl a chance while also exposing all three babies to the challenges of being born extremely early. The couple found themselves facing an impossible decision.

And then they made their final choice.

On July 3, Chloe gave birth to Henry, Rufus and Pearl, far earlier than their expected due date. Because they arrived early, all three babies were very small. Henry weighed 1.37kg, Rufus weighed 1.2kg, while little Pearl weighed just 690g, and all three required blood transfusions. However, Pearl faced the greatest number of challenges.

Chloe recalled: “Pearl had a patent ductus arteriosus. She also had bleeding in her lungs, a mild brain bleed, and had to fight an infection. There were days when we simply didn’t know what the outcome would be, especially during those first few weeks when she needed breathing support.” Pearl also developed a bone-mineral condition that required medication and experienced jaundice throughout her hospital stay.

“I felt so guilty bringing my two boys into the world while they were developing so well inside me. But Pearl wouldn’t have had a chance without being born early. So I don’t regret our decision. I remember there were moments when I wondered whether we should let things continue so the boys could have the strongest possible start. But now she is here, and my heart aches whenever I think about a life without her,” the mother of the triplets said.

Eventually, after several difficult weeks, things began to improve. After nine weeks in hospital, Henry and Rufus were finally able to go home. Pearl needed another two weeks before she was strong enough to return home with her parents and brothers.

The Dunstan family’s parenting journey has since been shared online, receiving praise and support from many people. Chloe regularly shares her children’s milestones and their progress as they continue growing together.

She said: “At this point, I still can’t say exactly what the future will look like, but I believe my three children will grow stronger and healthier without major problems. Pearl still needs several medications, most of them vitamin supplements. Every day, the children wake up around 4 or 5 a.m. for a feed. It takes me more than an hour to feed them all, change their diapers and settle them back to sleep. Sometimes it feels like a cycle that never ends.”

Two months after their arrival, Henry weighed 3.5kg, Rufus weighed 3kg and Pearl weighed 2kg. The three siblings have grown incredibly close. Chloe said: “They almost fall asleep immediately when they are together.”
