Sweet little Logan entered the world with a large mass connected to his right nostril and extending beneath his right eye — something his parents, Sarah and Dave, had never been warned about.

The pregnancy had been completely normal, and the mass had not been detected during any prenatal appointments. So when Sarah and Dave first saw their newborn son, they were understandably 𝗌𝗁𝗈𝖼𝗄𝖾𝖽.

At first, several doctors, pediatricians and dermatologists believed the unusual growth could be a hemangioma. But when Logan was just eight days old, everything changed.

He was unexpectedly admitted to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he spent 11 days with his heartbroken parents while doctors carried out a series of tests, including CT scans, an MRI, a PET scan and a tissue biopsy.

The results brought a devastating diagnosis.

Logan was found to have alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS), a rare and aggressive form of soft-tissue cancer requiring urgent treatment.

Suddenly, the quiet newborn days Sarah and Dave had imagined were replaced by hospital rooms, medical appointments and unfamiliar medical terminology.

But through it all, Logan continued to show his family just how much strength could be found in the smallest of people.

He completed six rounds of chemotherapy, and his family said they were incredibly proud of how resilient their little boy had been.

Despite everything happening around him, Logan remained full of smiles and cuddles — moments that helped brighten even the hardest days.

His oncologist was also encouraged by the progress seen in the physical appearance of the tumor.

Yet for Sarah and Dave, the emotional journey has been about more than medical treatment.

“One of the hardest parts of this journey has been coming to terms with the loss of the ‘typical’ newborn experience,” they shared.

Instead of peaceful days getting to know their new baby, their first months together were filled with hospital visits and learning how to navigate life as a “medical mom” and “medical dad.”

It has been heartbreaking at times, they admitted, but they have slowly learned to embrace their new reality and focus on giving Logan the best start possible.

After one of Logan’s surgeries, his family finally received a moment of relief. His surgical team was pleased with the outcome, and the family waited for final biopsy results from tissue near the tumor site.

Logan would still need further reconstruction involving his cheek and nose, but for the moment, his family could breathe a little easier.

And even during those difficult days, their little boy continued to surprise them.

Logan was smiling at 4:30 in the morning on the day of his surgery — and just one day later, he was smiling again.

“Such a superhero and so strong,” his family said, describing how proud and inspired they were by their brave little boy.

But another major hurdle soon arrived.

Following his previous procedure, biopsies revealed microscopic cancer cells remained. Logan was scheduled for another surgery on August 28, with doctors planning to address the remaining cells while also carrying out additional reconstruction of his right cheek and nose.

For Sarah and Dave, the days leading up to another operation brought a familiar mixture of hope and worry.

They continued placing their trust in Logan’s medical team while leaning on the prayers, encouragement and positive thoughts of everyone following his journey.

Through months of treatment, procedures and uncertainty, Logan has continued to greet the world with the smile his family treasures most.

For Sarah and Dave, every smile is a reminder of why they keep taking the journey one step at a time — together with their remarkably strong little boy.
