A newborn who was injured twice during a devastating attack on a maternity ward has remarkably survived the ordeal.

The baby was injured two times in the leg by suspected ISIS members as they entered a Kabul maternity ward dressed as police officers.

Twenty-four people, including mothers, nurses and newborns, lost their lives during the heartbreaking attack.

Amid the tragedy came a small ray of hope in the form of a baby who was just three hours old when the attack happened, The Times reported.

Doctors managed to perform surgery on the child’s leg, and she is now recovering well.

After laying his wife Nazia to rest, her husband Rafiullah named their newborn daughter after her.

Dr Noor ul-Haq Yousafzai, a director at the hospital, told The Times: โ€œWe treated Nazia’s fracture, so she will be able to walk when she grows up.

โ€œBut to see a newborn baby, just three hours old, injured twice. Everyone is shocked. This is inhuman.โ€

Another woman gave birth quietly while the attack continued around her.

She was assisted by a midwife who carefully separated the umbilical cord by hand.

There were 26 mothers in the hospital.

Eleven of them lost their lives during the hours-long attack, including three in a delivery room with their newborn babies.

Five others were injured.

Another 10 managed to make their way into โ€œsafe rooms,โ€ which are common in Afghanistan.
