CJ NEVER LOST HIS SMILE: THE LITTLE BOY WHO SPENT NINE MONTHS FILLING HIS FAMILY’S HEARTS WITH LOVE BEFORE LEAVING THIS WORLD IN HIS MOTHER’S ARMS

CJ came into the world with a smile that would leave a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. But behind that beautiful little smile was a heartbreaking medical journey that no family could ever be prepared for.
Born with two serious congenital heart conditions — an unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect and tetralogy of Fallot — CJ would spend much of his short life fighting for the chance to grow stronger.
Shortly after birth, he needed oxygen and spent his first six days in the neonatal intensive care unit. His family finally brought him home, cherishing nearly five weeks together before a frightening episode left him struggling with a bluish discoloration while resting in his father’s arms.

CJ was rushed to Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters before being transferred to the University of Virginia for specialist care.
At just seven weeks old, he underwent his first open-heart surgery. Doctors performed a Blalock-Taussig-Thomas shunt to improve blood flow to his lungs. But his challenges continued after the operation, and feeding difficulties meant he eventually needed a G-tube to receive the nutrition essential for his growth.
Through it all, CJ found a way to smile.
For his parents, those little expressions of happiness became precious reminders that their son was more than his medical diagnoses. He was a sweet baby discovering the world, responding to familiar voices and bringing light into even the most difficult hospital days.
After 29 days in hospital, CJ was finally able to return home. His family focused on helping him gain weight and prepare for the next major operation, holding close every moment they could spend together.
Then came May 8 — a day filled with hope and fear.

CJ underwent surgery intended to repair his complex heart defects. His family desperately hoped the procedure would bring him closer to a healthier future. Although he survived the operation, the repair was unsuccessful, and their little boy remained seriously unwell.
Another 39 days in hospital followed.
For his parents, the waiting and uncertainty were exhausting, but they continued to cherish CJ’s determination and joyful personality. Despite everything his tiny body had endured, he kept engaging with the people around him and showing the same spirit that had touched their hearts from the beginning.
“CJ gave it everything he had,” his family reflected, remembering the remarkable positivity he showed throughout his journey.
Every smile, every small response and every precious moment together meant more than words could express. His family held on to the hope that their little boy would have more time — more cuddles, more laughter and more opportunities to watch him grow.
Tragically, after those 39 days, CJ passed away peacefully in his mother’s arms.

He was just nine months old.
For his parents, the loss meant saying goodbye not only to the little boy they loved beyond measure, but also to all the milestones they had dreamed of sharing with him. There would be no first birthday, first steps or future family photographs showing how much he had grown.
Yet CJ’s story is not defined by hospital stays, surgeries or the challenges he faced. It is also a story of a little boy who brought joy into the lives of those around him, even when his own journey was filled with uncertainty.
His family will forever remember his smile, his personality and the precious time they were given together.
CJ may have been here for only nine months, but the love he received — and the love he leaves behind — will last a lifetime.
