THE SECRET THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING

THE SECRET THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING
Inside the old barn, Margaret finally revealed why she had returned.
Rose had been afraid someone would come looking for Milly.
Nathan frowned. “Who would want to take her?”
Margaret slowly turned the letter over.
Written on the back was a name Nathan had not heard in nearly ten years.
Walter Sullivan.
Margaret’s father.
Everyone believed he had died in Colorado eight years earlier. But Margaret had recently discovered evidence that he might still be alive.
Before Rose died, she had apparently received a warning from someone connected to Walter.
The letter contained a final message:
“If anything happens to me, protect Amelia. There are things about her birth that Nathan must never learn from strangers.”
Nathan’s hands tightened around the paper.
“What does this mean, Margaret?”
She looked toward the farmhouse window, where Milly was watching them.
“I don’t know everything,” she admitted. “But I believe my father knows why Rose was so frightened.”
Suddenly, a horse whinnied outside.
Nathan turned toward the barn entrance.
A rider had stopped near the ranch gate. His face was hidden beneath a dark hat.
He held a sealed envelope.
When Nathan stepped outside, the stranger spoke just five words:
“Mr. Whitfield, we found her.”
Nathan looked back toward the farmhouse.
Milly was standing in the doorway.
And for the first time in years, he realized that the greatest danger to the little girl might not come from the past.
It might already be standing at his gate.
