The Mountain Man’s Secret Changes Everything

The Mountain Man’s Secret Changes Everything
Mae stared at the document, unable to believe what she was reading.

It was a signed confession.

Her husband had admitted to stealing money from the mining company’s payroll and placing the blame on an innocent man.

That man was Gideon’s younger brother, Thomas Hale.

Three years earlier, Thomas had been imprisoned for a crime he never committed.

Mae slowly raised her eyes.

“You bought us because of Silas?”

Gideon nodded.

“I paid him to sign that confession. He thought he was signing away his rights to you and the boy.”

Mae stepped backward, holding Samuel tightly.

“Then why bring us here?”

“Because Silas discovered you knew where he hid the stolen money. And men like him don’t forgive people who know their secrets.”

Mae remembered the locked chest beneath their cabin floor.

She had seen Silas bury it months earlier.

Gideon moved toward the fireplace.

“You’re not my property, Mae. Neither is your son. When the mountain passes reopen, I’ll take you wherever you choose.”

She stared at him.

“And until then?”

“You’ll have a warm bed, food, and a door you can lock from the inside.”

Mae began to cry.

For the first time in years, someone had offered her safety without demanding anything in return.

That night, Gideon slept beside the fireplace while Mae and Samuel rested in the cabin’s only bedroom.

But just before dawn, three sharp knocks shattered the silence.

Gideon rose instantly.

Outside stood an exhausted rider, his horse trembling in the snow.

“Gideon! You’ve got trouble!”

The mountain man opened the door.

“What happened?”

“Silas Walker’s coming up the ridge. He’s brought six men, and they’re carrying rifles.”

Mae appeared in the doorway, pale with fear.

“He’s coming for Samuel,” she whispered.

Gideon’s expression darkened.

The rider hesitated.

“That’s not all. Silas says the baby isn’t yours to protect. Claims there’s something about that boy nobody knows.”

Mae suddenly gripped the doorframe.

Gideon turned toward her.

“What does he mean?”

She swallowed hard.

“Samuel isn’t Silas’s son.”

Silence filled the cabin.

Then Mae spoke the words she had hidden for eight long months.

“Gideon… I knew your brother Thomas before they took him away.”

And for the first time since arriving at Blackstone Ridge, the most feared mountain man in Colorado looked genuinely afraid.

Because suddenly, he understood why Silas had been so eager to sell the child.
