PART 2: THE SECRET OF THUNDER MOUNTAIN

PART 2: THE SECRET OF THUNDER MOUNTAIN
The following weeks changed Mercy’s life. Caleb never demanded more than honest work. He taught her to bake bread, care for injured animals, and read the mountain trails.

One evening, Mercy discovered an old photograph beside Caleb’s fireplace. It showed a smiling woman wearing the same blue dress.

“Was she your wife?” Mercy asked.

Caleb nodded. His wife had died years earlier, leaving him with a house full of memories and a heart he believed would never heal.

“That dress belonged to my sister,” he explained. “She believed every woman deserved to feel beautiful, no matter what the world said about her.”

Mercy gently touched the fabric.

Then winter brought an unexpected visitor. Silas arrived with two armed men, demanding that Caleb return the woman he had purchased.

“She belongs to me until the debt is paid!” Silas shouted.

Caleb stepped onto the porch, holding his rifle.

“No woman belongs to anyone. Not even the man who paid for her freedom.”

Silas laughed and revealed that he had forged documents claiming Mercy’s father owed him the mountain property as well.

But Mercy finally found her courage.

She stepped forward and presented the letters her father had hidden in her belongings, proving Silas had already been paid.

The sheriff, summoned by a neighboring rancher, arrested Silas for fraud and illegal confinement.

That night, Mercy stood beside Caleb beneath the stars.

“I have nowhere else to go,” she whispered.

Caleb looked at her gently.

“Then stay because you want to, Mercy. Not because you owe me.”

For the first time, she smiled without fear.

And when spring finally arrived, the woman once sold for three hundred dollars became the heart of Thunder Mountain, proving that a person’s worth could never be measured by money, appearance, or the cruelty of others.
