A Newborn’s Rare Congenital Condition Brings Attention to a Remarkable Medical Journey and Hope for Recovery

Baby Maisie Tobin was born with her intestines outside her body due to a rare congenital defect. Fortunately, the surgery to reattach her abdominal cavity was successful, and her health has stabilized.

Maise Tobin, from England, was born with a congenital defect where most of her internal organs (large and small intestines) were located outside her abdominal cavity. According to doctors, there was a problem during fetal development, and the abdominal wall did not fully develop, resulting in the intestines being outside the abdominal cavity.
“When we found out I was pregnant, my family was overjoyed, but when we went to the hospital for an ultrasound at 12 weeks, the doctor told me that the baby had a congenital defect. I was very worried and scared. Thanks to the doctor’s reassurance, I calmed down and tried my best to take good care of my child.”

“The first time I saw my child, all my emotions overwhelmed me. Her tiny body was covered in machines. Even though I knew beforehand, seeing her like that was incredibly heartbreaking.”
Upon birth, baby Maise Tobin was wrapped in adhesive tape to stabilize her intestines outside her body and prevent infection. Doctors quickly performed surgery after a preliminary examination. Currently, Maise Tobin’s health is stable.

“Thank goodness the surgery was successful. I don’t know how to thank the doctors for saving my daughter’s life. I’m so happy.”
Two weeks after the surgery, Maise was able to go home and receive normal care. The surgery will not significantly affect her development, digestion, or breathing.
