Texas Mother Surprised by Birth of Rare Natural Quadruplets

A remarkable birth in Texas has captured national attention after a mother who believed she was expecting triplets unexpectedly delivered four babies. The rare event took place at Hillcrest Hospital in the city of Waco, where doctors witnessed a delivery unlike any in the hospital’s history.

Vivian Van Gorder underwent a planned cesarean section on Monday, anticipating the arrival of three babies. However, during the procedure, the medical team discovered something surprising. As the delivery progressed, her doctor noticed an additional tiny limb — another elbow — revealing that there was actually a fourth baby still to be delivered.

Moments later, a fourth newborn was brought into the world, leaving both the family and medical staff stunned. The unexpected arrival marked the first set of quadruplets ever born at Hillcrest Hospital.

In total, the family welcomed four healthy babies — two boys and two girls. Each newborn weighed between 4.5 and 5.5 pounds, a promising weight range for multiple births, according to the doctors who oversaw the delivery.

What makes the case even more extraordinary is that the pregnancy occurred naturally, without the use of fertility treatments. According to the attending physician, Dr. Carl Dunn, naturally conceived quadruplet pregnancies are extremely rare.

Medical experts estimate that pregnancies involving quadruplets occur only about once in a million naturally. In the United States, roughly 220 sets of quadruplets are born each year, but the vast majority result from assisted reproductive technologies.

Because the family had been preparing for three babies rather than four, they had not yet chosen a name for the final newborn. The parents had already selected names for the other babies: Tristan, Erik, and Clare. The fourth baby girl, temporarily known as “Baby D,” is still waiting for her official name.

For the Van Gorder family and the medical staff who witnessed the delivery, the event has been described as a once-in-a-lifetime moment — a rare and joyful surprise that turned an already special day into a historic one.
