The Expendables 5 (2025)

The Expendables 5 marks a thrilling return to the high-octane world of mercenaries, explosions, and camaraderie that the franchise is known for. Directed by Scott Waugh, the fifth installment delivers exactly what fans have come to expect: a non-stop adrenaline rush packed with iconic action stars, explosive set pieces, and plenty of nostalgic references to the golden age of action cinema.

Plot & Characters
The story picks up after the chaos of the previous film, with Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) leading a new team of elite soldiers on a mission that takes them deep into hostile territory. This time, the team faces an international conspiracy that threatens world security, and the stakes have never been higher. As the plot unfolds, they discover a vast web of betrayal, espionage, and corrupt power players.
While the plot is straightforward—essentially serving as a vehicle for action set-pieces—it does have a few surprises, particularly in how the characters are developed. Stallone, of course, reprises his role as the grizzled leader, but there’s also a new dynamic with younger mercenaries joining the ranks, including some familiar faces from earlier films in the series. Jason Statham returns as Lee Christmas, providing both action and moments of levity with his dry humor.
The chemistry between the core members of the team is one of the strongest aspects of Expendables 5. There’s a clear sense of camaraderie, even as the team faces personal and moral dilemmas. A new villain, played by a charismatic yet cold actor (think along the lines of a modern-day action star with a twist), adds some serious tension to the story.
Action & Visuals
As expected, the action is the real star of this film. The fight choreography is tight, and the film doesn’t shy away from brutal hand-to-hand combat, as well as classic shootouts and vehicular mayhem. What sets this installment apart is its emphasis on practical effects mixed with CGI, which allows the explosions, gunfire, and fight sequences to feel grounded in reality while still maintaining that over-the-top quality fans love.
