Florida NICU Dresses Its Tiniest Patients in Red, White, and Blue for America’s 250th Birthday

In a heartwarming celebration of Independence Day, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, part of Memorial Hospital West in Florida, dressed its tiniest patients in festive patriotic outfits to mark America’s 250th birthday.
The NICU team organized special photo shoots, adorning the babies in adorable Uncle Sam, all-American sweetheart, and patriotic slugger costumes. This thoughtful gesture brought the joyful spirit of the Fourth of July directly to the hospital, creating cherished memories for families spending the holiday in the NICU.

Heartfelt Reactions from Parents
One mother, Dynah Sistrunk, shared how meaningful the celebration was, especially as her husband is active military:
“It’s so sweet to have these memories because we don’t always get opportunities like this in the NICU. The fact that everyone takes the time to do something so special for families means so much.”
Another mom, Linda Prado, whose baby is named Alisa, expressed the comfort these moments provided during an emotional journey:
“Having our baby in the NICU can feel like we are missing out on some of the moments we imagined, so being able to celebrate these special memories makes us feel included and connected as parents. Seeing our baby being celebrated, loved, and recognized brings comfort to our hearts.”
She added that these small celebrations become big milestones, reminding families of their babies’ strength and resilience.

A Team Effort Rooted in Compassion
The NICU care team emphasized that these traditions are a collective effort to support families through challenging times:
“As NICU nurses, we have the privilege of caring for some of the smallest and most medically fragile patients, but we also have the privilege of walking this journey alongside their families. We celebrate every milestone… These traditions are an extension of that compassion.”
By creating these joyful experiences, the staff helps bring a sense of normalcy and hope to parents and their premature or medically fragile newborns.
This story is a beautiful reminder of the kindness and creativity within healthcare teams, turning a hospital stay into a moment of celebration and connection. Happy 250th Birthday, America!
