When Kadiatu first held her newborn daughter Almira in her arms, she was filled with love — but also confusion and fear.

She had never seen a baby born with a cleft lip before and had no idea what the condition meant for her little girl’s future.

Local health workers explained Almira’s condition and introduced the family to Mercy Ships, an international charity that provides free specialist surgery in communities where access to reconstructive care can be limited.

For Almira, the road to recovery would not be a single operation.

Her cleft lip and palate made some of the earliest months of childhood more difficult, particularly when it came to feeding. Like many children with cleft conditions, she needed carefully planned treatment as she grew, with surgery helping to support feeding, speech and the development of her face.

Her treatment unfolded over several years and across three separate Mercy Ships missions.

Each time, the family had to travel, attend medical assessments, prepare for surgery and then patiently wait for the next stage of Almira’s care. When the ship left, they returned home knowing another chapter of their daughter’s treatment would have to wait.

For Kadiatu, the journey was not always easy.

“There were times when we worried about what the future would look like for Almira,” her family shared. “But we kept believing that every step was bringing her closer to a happier childhood.”

Along the way, the family also had to navigate the attention that can come with a visible facial difference. But through every appointment and recovery, Kadiatu remained determined to give her daughter the opportunities she deserved.

Then, after three operations, the long-awaited moment finally arrived.

Almira completed her planned surgical treatment, and the feeding difficulties associated with her original condition eased. Her family could finally look toward the future without wondering when the next stage of treatment would come.

“She has always been our beautiful girl,” her family said. “Seeing her smile so freely now means more to us than words can explain.”

For Kadiatu, those smiles represent far more than a healed surgical site. They are a reminder of the years of patience, travel, uncertainty and hope that brought her daughter to this point.
