When Michał Herold was still growing in his mother’s womb, doctors discovered severe hydrocephalus at 31 weeks of pregnancy.

His condition was so serious that doctors feared he would not survive.

Born on October 5, Michał immediately began a fight for his life. He could not breathe independently and needed a ventilator. Soon after, he underwent surgery to treat bleeding in his brain, but complications with intubation and significant blood loss made the situation even more critical.

Just two hours after the procedure, further bleeding meant Michał had to return to the operating room.

That was when his parents heard the words every parent dreads: they should prepare for the worst and say goodbye to their son.

But Michał kept fighting.

The little boy faced more procedures, struggled to breathe and was unable to feed on his own. Just when his parents believed they might finally be able to take him home, his condition worsened again and another brain operation was needed.

Michał eventually left hospital at two months old, but his family was still facing an enormous unknown. He had a rare genetic condition so unusual that doctors had never encountered a similar case.

“We were told there was very little hope,” his family shared. “Today, doctors call Michał a miracle. We simply want to give him every opportunity to keep moving forward.”

Now, Michał continues to face daily challenges with remarkable determination.

His development has been significantly delayed. He has difficulty holding his head and cannot yet sit independently, while the size of his head remains a major concern. Yet intensive rehabilitation is helping him make small but meaningful steps.

He attends speech and alternative communication therapy, receives regular rehabilitation and enjoys swimming, massage and hippotherapy. Recently, he learned to take off his own socks — a tiny achievement that brought enormous happiness to his family.

“He is learning to communicate with us little by little,” his parents said. “Every new skill, no matter how small it may seem to others, feels like a huge victory for our family.”

Michał has also recently endured another frightening setback, developing a serious infection accompanied by a persistent fever that required hospitalization and breathing support.

Once again, he pulled through.

After everything he has faced, his family refuses to stop believing in his future.

“We don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but Michał has already shown us how much he wants to be here,” they said. “We will continue doing everything we can to help him grow, learn and simply be happy.”

His journey now depends on continued specialist care and intensive rehabilitation, which place a significant financial burden on the family.

For his parents, however, every therapy session, every new movement and every tiny achievement is another reason to keep going.

Michał was once given almost no hope of surviving — yet he is still here, still learning, still smiling, and still showing his family that his story is far from over.
