A mother has shared the heartbreaking story of losing her newborn daughter just six days after welcoming her into the world — a devastating journey that began with an emergency delivery and ended with a family learning to live with an unimaginable loss.

At 39 weeks pregnant, the mother was rushed into an emergency C-section after doctors discovered that her placenta had begun separating from the uterus. Complications during the procedure left her baby girl without enough oxygen reaching her brain.

Her newborn daughter was immediately transferred to Nemours, where doctors began intensive treatment. For 72 hours, her body was carefully cooled in an effort to protect as much brain function as possible.

But when doctors gradually warmed her, there was no sign of brain function.

The little girl was subsequently declared brain dead, leaving her mother facing a reality she had never imagined when she first carried her daughter.

“I had spent nine months imagining her life,” her mother shared. “I was ready to love her, watch her grow, and see her and her sister become best friends. I never imagined that instead, I would be planning her funeral.”

For days, the family stayed beside their precious baby, hoping for moments they could hold onto. Eventually, her mother had to say goodbye while holding her daughter in her arms.

The loss has continued to affect the family every day.

The mother also has a two-year-old daughter who is still too young to understand why her baby sister is no longer coming home.
