NEW MOTHER’S 𝖲𝖧𝖮𝖢𝖪 AS SHE DISCOVERS HER BABY BOY ELI WAS BORN WITHOUT A NOSE — A RARE CONDITION KNOWN AS CONGENITAL ARHINIA

When Brandi McGlathery first held her newborn son against her chest, she expected the familiar joy of meeting her baby for the very first time. Instead, she noticed something she never could have imagined: her little boy had been born without a nose.
Eli Thompson was born on March 4 at South Baldwin Hospital in Alabama, to Brandi and her partner, Troy Thompson. Despite earlier ultrasounds, the family had not been prepared for the discovery that would change the beginning of their parenting journey forever.

“I pulled back and said, ‘Something’s wrong!’” Brandi recalled. When the doctor reassured her that her baby was doing well, she desperately tried to explain what she had noticed: “He doesn’t have a nose!”
Eli was later transferred to USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, where specialists worked to address the challenges caused by his rare condition. Without a nasal cavity, he needed a tracheotomy to help him breathe safely.
His diagnosis was complete congenital arhinia, an extraordinarily rare condition in which a baby is born without an external nose or the internal structures normally responsible for the sense of smell. At the time of the original report, only around 37 cases had been documented worldwide.

For Brandi and Troy, the early days meant adjusting to an unexpected medical journey while learning how best to care for their precious son. Like any parents, they wanted Eli to be comfortable, happy and able to enjoy the little moments of childhood.
Thankfully, after his breathing procedure, Eli began doing well.
“He has done wonderfully since then,” Brandi shared, explaining that he seemed much happier. Even the smallest surprises brought joy to the family. Eli could still sneeze despite his unusual anatomy, and the first time he did, his parents exchanged astonished looks, wondering whether they had heard correctly.

Those little moments helped remind them that their son was so much more than his diagnosis.
“The rest of him is so cute, sometimes you don’t realize he doesn’t have a nose,” Brandi said.
Although reconstructive surgery may be an option in the future, Brandi and Troy have made a deeply personal decision: they will let Eli grow up and decide for himself whether he wants to have a nose reconstructed.

“Until the day he wants to have a nose, we don’t want to touch him,” Brandi explained. “We have to take it day by day. We’re going to do our best to make sure he’s happy.”
For now, their focus is on helping Eli grow, supporting his medical needs and surrounding him with the same unconditional love every child deserves.
His journey began with an unexpected discovery and medical challenges no parent anticipates. Yet his story is also one of acceptance, resilience and a family determined to let their little boy define his own future.

And Brandi’s message about her son remains simple but powerful: “He’s perfect the way he is.”
