“THE GRIEF NEVER TRULY LEAVES”: LINDSEY BURROW OPENS UP ABOUT LIFE WITHOUT RUGBY LEGEND ROB AS SHE RAISES THEIR THREE CHILDREN
More than two years after losing her husband to motor neurone disease, Lindsey Burrow is learning to navigate life without her childhood sweetheart — while keeping his memory alive for their three children.
More than two years after the death of rugby league legend Rob Burrow, his wife Lindsey continues to face the painful reality of life without the man she loved for most of her life.
Rob, the former Leeds Rhinos star, died in June 2024 at the age of 41 after a courageous battle with motor neurone disease (MND). His death left Lindsey and their three children, Macy, Maya and Jackson, facing a future without the husband and father who had been at the heart of their family.
In recent interviews, Lindsey has spoken candidly about the unpredictable nature of grief — how a familiar song, a family milestone or an ordinary moment can suddenly bring back the pain of losing someone so deeply loved.
Yet alongside that heartbreak, she is determined to keep a promise she made to Rob: to continue living life to the fullest and give their children the happiest future she can.
WHEN GRIEF RETURNS WITHOUT WARNING
For Lindsey, grief does not simply disappear with the passing of time.
A memory can surface unexpectedly, turning an ordinary day into a difficult one. Seeing other fathers spending time with their children can also remind her of the moments Rob should still be sharing with their family.
She has acknowledged that there are good days and bad days, and that moving forward does not mean forgetting the person who has died.
Lindsey and Rob had been together since their teenage years and shared 17 years of marriage. Their relationship was built through years of family life, sporting achievements and, eventually, the enormous challenges brought by Rob’s diagnosis.
The memories they created remain precious, even when remembering them hurts.
RAISING THREE CHILDREN WITHOUT THEIR FATHER
Macy, Maya and Jackson remain at the centre of Lindsey’s world.
Helping them grow up while keeping their father’s memory alive has become one of her greatest priorities. She has spoken about the strength her children give her and how they continue to inspire her to keep moving forward.
There are milestones Rob will never physically be present to witness — birthdays, school achievements and the everyday moments that families often take for granted.
Those absences can be particularly painful. But Lindsey continues to find ways to ensure the children can talk about their dad, revisit happy memories and understand the extraordinary love he had for them.
For the family, moving forward does not mean leaving Rob behind. His presence remains part of their shared story.
THE LEGACY ROB LEFT BEHIND
Rob was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in December 2019. The progressive neurological condition gradually affected his movement, speech and ability to breathe independently.
Rather than retreat from public life, he chose to share his experience and help raise awareness of the disease.
Alongside his close friend and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, Rob inspired remarkable fundraising efforts and helped bring national attention to the challenges faced by people living with MND and their families.
His legacy continues through initiatives supporting patients and carers, including the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds, which opened in November 2025. Lindsey has also continued supporting the cause that became so important to her husband.
For her, that work is deeply personal. Every improvement in support for families affected by MND carries forward something Rob fought to achieve.
HAS LINDSEY RECEIVED A NEW MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS?
Dramatic online posts have suggested that Lindsey has received a frightening diagnosis of her own. However, the recent credible reports reviewed for this article do not confirm that claim.
Her publicly documented interviews focus on bereavement, raising her children and preserving Rob’s legacy. Without a direct statement from Lindsey or reliable reporting confirming a new diagnosis, the claim should not be presented as fact.
The emotional challenges she has described are significant in their own right and deserve to be reported accurately and with compassion.
A LOVE THAT REMAINS
Lindsey’s journey is not about leaving grief behind. It is about learning to live alongside it while raising three children, preserving treasured memories and continuing the work that mattered so much to Rob.
Their story has touched people far beyond the world of rugby league because it speaks to love, family and the difficult process of carrying on after a devastating loss.
Rob Burrow may no longer be physically beside his family, but his influence remains in the children he adored, the people he inspired and the work being done to support others living with MND.
For Lindsey, keeping his memory alive is not simply a tribute to the past. It is part of the future she is building for their children — one day at a time.
