“CHRISTA PIKE IS DEAD” RUMORS SPREAD ONLINE — BUT DEATH ROW INMATE BREAKS HER SILENCE AFTER FAILED EXECUTION

One month after surviving two doses of a lethal injection drug, Christa Pike says she is still living with constant physical and emotional pain. Her first public statement has revealed what she says happened after she woke up in a hospital.

TENNESSEE — Online rumors claiming that Christa Pike had died began circulating following Tennessee’s failed execution attempt on September 30, 2026.

But those claims are false.

Pike, 50, is alive and has now spoken publicly for the first time since surviving the botched lethal injection, describing ongoing pain, difficulty speaking and the emotional toll of waking up in a hospital after believing she was about to die.

Her statement, released through her attorneys on October 30, came exactly one month after the execution attempt at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

Pike said she entered the execution chamber prepared to die.

She had said goodbye to people who had supported her over the years and believed that September 30 would be her final day.

But several days later, she woke up in a hospital, confused and in pain.

“There hasn’t been a moment since that night when I haven’t been in pain,” she said.

“My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak.”

She also described the emotional consequences of surviving an experience she had never expected to live beyond.

“The pain isn’t just physical. There is pain in my mind and in my soul,” she said.

WHAT HAPPENED INSIDE THE EXECUTION CHAMBER?

On September 30, Tennessee officials attempted to execute Pike using pentobarbital, the state’s lethal injection drug.

She received two doses, but the procedure did not result in her death.

Pike was taken to a hospital in critical condition and remained unconscious for several days, requiring a ventilator and medical treatment.

Her attorneys have raised concerns that the intravenous lines may not have been properly placed, potentially allowing the drug to enter surrounding tissue rather than her bloodstream.

The precise circumstances of the failed procedure remain under investigation.

Pike later returned to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she is being held in the prison’s medical unit.

In her statement, Pike acknowledged that her condition has improved, but said recovery has not been easy.

She also described being largely isolated in the prison medical ward, away from the human contact she said was important to her.

After spending 28 years in solitary confinement, she said the experience has brought back some of the same feelings.

Pike also expressed gratitude to the doctors, nurses, first responders and people around the world who have sent messages of support.

She said she continues to think about the family of her victim, Colleen Slemmer, who was 19 when she was killed in 1995.

“I don’t know why I survived that night. I don’t know what comes next,” Pike said.

“For now, I am trying to heal, one day at a time.”

WHAT HAPPENS TO HER DEATH SENTENCE NOW?

Pike remains sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, a former classmate at the University of Tennessee.

Her attorneys are seeking to have her sentence reduced to life imprisonment and have challenged aspects of the failed execution.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent review of the state’s execution procedures and suspended the remaining scheduled executions for 2026.

Authorities have not announced a new execution date for Pike.

For now, her future remains uncertain.

The woman whose execution was supposed to take place on September 30 is still alive — and her first public words have revealed the physical and emotional consequences she says she continues to face.
