FOUR-YEAR-OLD LOUIS JENKINS LOST BOTH LEGS AND THE USE OF ONE ARM AFTER A DEVASTATING BATTLE WITH MENINGITIS

Meningitis changed four-year-old Louis Jenkins’ life forever, but his incredible determination to overcome challenges has inspired people around the world.
Four-year-old Louis Jenkins, from Colne, England, developed a severe form of meningitis that resulted in both of his legs and several fingers on his left hand being amputated. Today, he relies on prosthetic legs and his right hand to carry out everyday activities.
Although walking with prosthetic legs is far from easy and can be uncomfortable, particularly when climbing stairs or taking part in physical activities, Louis continues to smile, play and learn just like other children his age.

His mother, Julie, explained that because Louis wanted the freedom to move around independently, she arranged to have nine sets of prosthetic legs available at home so he could use them whenever needed.
“He learned everything from crawling and sitting to walking, just like any other child, although the training was incredibly challenging,” she said.
“Louis is a determined little boy with a strong personality. He always tries to finish everything himself, makes his own decisions and doesn’t like asking us for help. He says he feels really happy when he discovers new things on his own,” Julie added.

Touched by the young boy’s determination, many generous supporters have donated money to help him. However, Louis’s family decided to use only part of the donations for his care, while the remaining funds would go towards supporting a local disability charity.
Incredibly, Louis has also taken part in a charity walking event organised by the organisation to help raise additional funds.
According to Julie, the walking event for people with disabilities is an important opportunity to raise awareness of meningitis and support others affected by the condition.

“It’s wonderful that he can take part in the event. I believe he will do really well and get the chance to meet some of the people who have supported the charity,” she said.
For Louis, every step represents another achievement. His story is a powerful reminder that determination, courage and a little independence can help a child overcome challenges that many people might never imagine.
