When Lidia and her partner Lenny welcomed their baby boy Lorenzo in April, they had no idea their newborn would soon face a journey that would take their family across the world.

The pregnancy had been completely healthy, with no warnings that anything was wrong. But after Lorenzo was born, doctors discovered he had an extremely rare condition called Tibial Hemimelia.

In Lorenzo’s case, both tibias, kneecaps and ankles are missing. Doctors in Canada initially told his parents that amputation was the only option.

But Lidia and Lenny could not accept that as the end of their son’s story.

They spent countless hours searching for answers and eventually traveled to Dubai, where a specialist offered another possibility — a long series of complex procedures designed to preserve Lorenzo’s legs and potentially give him up to 90% function.

The journey has already been incredibly demanding for the tiny boy.

When the family arrived in Dubai, Lorenzo spent three months in a cast while doctors worked to properly align his hips and protect his future mobility. Then came the next stage: his legs.

Doctors chose to begin with his right leg, carefully extending and rotating the leg and ankle with the help of an external fixator. The frame must be adjusted regularly while Lorenzo also attends physiotherapy to gradually strengthen his leg and learn how to move it.

There have been difficult moments along the way, especially because Lorenzo’s bones are so fragile. His family also has to carefully clean the fixator several times each week to help prevent complications.

But little by little, Lorenzo has continued moving forward.

After several procedures, including one to rotate his foot and another to address his underdeveloped knee, his right leg is now fully straight.

For Lidia and Lenny, seeing that progress has made every difficult day worth it.

“Lorenzo has been through so much already, but he continues to surprise us,” his family shared. “Every little improvement gives us another reason to believe in his future.”

“We know there is still a long road ahead, but we are incredibly proud of our little boy. He is showing us a strength we never knew was possible.”

The family says they are now halfway through the journey.

The next step will be to begin the same process on Lorenzo’s left leg — meaning more procedures, months of therapy and many more challenges ahead.

The treatment is expected to cost around $1.5 million, with the family remaining in Dubai for Lorenzo’s care.

For Lidia and Lenny, this is about more than preserving their son’s legs. It is about giving Lorenzo the opportunity to stand, walk, play and experience childhood in the years ahead.

“We just want Lorenzo to have the chance to grow up and discover what he can do,” his family said. “We will keep going for him, one step at a time.”
