The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Wyatt Mercer stared at the message until the letters blurred.
His wife had been dead for ten years.
Yet the handwriting was unmistakable.
“Where is Eleanor?” he demanded.
Sheriff Briggs said nothing.
Dr. Reed stepped forward.
“Tell him, Harlan. He deserves the truth.”
The sheriff’s face hardened.
“That woman should have stayed hidden.”
Wyatt lunged toward him, but Reed caught his arm.
“Listen to me,” the doctor pleaded. “Eleanor survived the fire.”
The words struck Wyatt like lightning.
“Then where was my daughter?”
Reed’s eyes filled with regret.
“Someone took her that night. Eleanor spent years searching.”
Wyatt felt the room spinning.
For ten years, he’d visited two graves.
For ten years, he’d believed himself alone.
“And you knew?”
“I found out only three months ago,” Reed whispered. “Eleanor contacted me. She said she’d uncovered something terrible about the ranch.”
Briggs suddenly drew his revolver.
“Enough!”
Wyatt froze.
The sheriff pointed the weapon toward Reed.
“That woman should never have come back.”
A voice came from the clinic doorway.
“Put the gun down, Harlan.”
Everyone turned.
A woman stood beneath the porch light, wearing a faded traveling coat.
Her face was thinner.
A pale scar crossed her forehead.
But Wyatt knew those eyes.
“Eleanor?”
She looked at him, tears running down her cheeks.
“I’m sorry, Wyatt.”
The sheriff turned his weapon toward her.
Before he could act, Copper’s loud neigh sounded outside, followed by approaching hoofbeats.
Two federal marshals appeared behind Eleanor.
“Drop your weapon, Sheriff!”
Briggs hesitated, then surrendered.
Eleanor rushed into Wyatt’s arms.
For a moment, neither could speak.
Then Wyatt looked toward the baby.
“Is she… ours?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Our daughter would be eleven now.”
Wyatt’s heart sank.
“Then whose baby is she?”
Eleanor approached the examination table.
“Her name is Rose. She’s our granddaughter.”
Wyatt could barely breathe.
“Our granddaughter?”
Eleanor nodded.
“I found our daughter six months ago. She had a child, and she was preparing to expose the men who stole her from us.”
“Where is she now?”
Eleanor’s smile disappeared.
“That’s why I came back.”
She reached into her coat and produced a photograph.
It showed a young woman standing beside a familiar ranch house.
Wyatt recognized the building immediately.
The abandoned property beyond his northern pasture.
Eleanor squeezed his hand.
“Wyatt, our daughter is being held somewhere on your land.”
And then she revealed the name of the man responsible.
“Your own brother, Thomas.”
