THE QUESTION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

THE QUESTION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
“Will you promise never to make those children feel like they owe you anything for loving them?”
Gideon froze.
For a moment, the enormous man seemed unable to speak.
Clara continued quietly.
“I don’t want those children growing up believing they are a burden. They have already lost their mother. They deserve a home where they can laugh, make mistakes, and feel safe.”
Gideon’s eyes filled with tears again.
“They deserve better than anything I can give them,” he whispered.
Clara shook her head.
“They deserve someone who won’t give up on them.”
Then she reached for the document.
“I’ll come with you.”
Nobody moved.
Frank Jessup, the man who had laughed the loudest, slowly lowered his glass.
Gideon stared at Clara as though he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
“You don’t even know me,” he said.
“Perhaps,” Clara answered, “but I know what it feels like to be left alone.”
Within minutes, they were preparing to leave for the mountain cabin.
Outside, the winter wind was growing stronger. Somewhere in the darkness, two little children were waiting for their uncle.
But Clara had no idea that the greatest challenge of her new life wasn’t the freezing mountain, the difficult journey, or even the unexpected marriage.
It was a secret Gideon had kept buried for years.
And when she finally discovered why he had spent so long living alone, she would understand that the man everyone feared had been carrying a heartbreak far greater than anyone imagined.
