My Husband Invited His Mistress to Thanksgiving—Then Our Son Played the Voicemail

PART 2 — THE SECRET MY DAUGHTER HAD BEEN HIDING FOR SIXTEEN YEARS

“TURN IT OFF, NOAH! PLEASE!”

My daughter Emily screamed across the Thanksgiving table.

But Noah didn’t move.

My husband Richard stood frozen beside his mistress, Vanessa. His face had turned a sickening shade of gray.

I stared at Emily.

“What do you know about Noah’s father?”

She covered her mouth, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Mom, I was only eight. I didn’t understand what I saw.”

The room fell silent.

“Emily,” I whispered. “Tell me.”

She looked at Richard.

“Dad, I’m sorry. I can’t keep lying for you.”

Richard slammed his fist against the table.

“ENOUGH! THIS FAMILY DISCUSSION IS OVER!”

But Noah pressed PLAY.

Vanessa’s voice returned.

“You promised Catherine would never discover the adoption documents. If she learns what happened at the hospital sixteen years ago, she’ll destroy us.”

My entire body went cold.

Adoption documents?

Sixteen years ago?

I remembered giving birth to Noah after eighteen hours of labor. I remembered holding him against my chest, kissing his tiny forehead, and hearing the nurse say he was healthy.

“What adoption?” I asked.

Richard wouldn’t look at me.

Emily began sobbing.

“Mom, when Noah was born, I heard Grandma arguing with Dad in the hospital hallway. Grandma kept saying they couldn’t let you know about the other baby.”

My heart stopped.

“The other baby?”

Emily nodded.

“I thought she meant Noah. But last month, I found Grandma’s old letters in Dad’s office.”

She reached into her purse and pulled out a yellow envelope.

Richard lunged toward her.

“GIVE ME THAT!”

Noah stepped between them.

“Don’t touch her.”

I opened the envelope with shaking hands.

Inside was a hospital photograph.

Two newborn boys lay side by side.

Both wore bracelets bearing my last name.

Beneath the photograph was a handwritten note:

Baby A — Miller, Noah.

Baby B — Miller, Jonathan.

I couldn’t speak.

Sixteen years ago, the doctors told me I’d delivered one healthy baby.

But the photograph showed two.

“Richard,” I whispered, “did I have twins?”

My husband slowly sat down.

For the first time in twenty-seven years, he looked afraid of me.

“Yes.”

The word shattered my world.

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Where is my other son?”

Richard stared at the floor.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Richard, don’t tell her!”

I turned toward her.

“WHY DO YOU CARE ABOUT MY CHILD?”

She began trembling.

And then Richard said something I never expected.

“Because Vanessa knows where Jonathan is.”

I looked between them.

“You told me she was your business consultant.”

Richard swallowed.

“She isn’t.”

Noah’s voice cracked.

“Then who is she, Dad?”

Before Richard could answer, Emily pulled another letter from the envelope.

“Mom, there’s something else.”

It was dated sixteen years earlier and signed by my mother-in-law.

I read the first sentence aloud.

Richard, I have arranged for Jonathan to be placed with the family we discussed. Catherine must never know she delivered twins.

My hands shook so violently I could barely hold the page.

The letter continued.

The money has been transferred. Once the adoption is completed, there must be no further contact.

I looked at Richard.

“You sold my baby?”

He covered his face.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like that.”

“YOU SOLD MY SON?”

Noah started crying.

“Mom, does that mean I have a brother?”

I pulled him into my arms.

“Yes, sweetheart. You have a brother.”

Then Vanessa whispered something that made everyone turn.

“Jonathan isn’t a child anymore.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

She wiped her tears.

“He turned sixteen last month. He’s been asking questions about his birth mother.”

My heart pounded.

“You know him?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Better than you think.”

Richard suddenly grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t.”

She pulled away.

“No, Richard. She deserves the truth.”

Then she looked directly into my eyes.

“Catherine, Jonathan has been living with my family his entire life.”

The dining room fell silent.

“And three months ago,” she continued, “he found out who his biological mother was.”

My throat tightened.

“Does he know about me?”

Vanessa began crying.

“Yes.”

“Then why hasn’t he contacted me?”

She hesitated.

“Because Richard told him you were dead.”

I nearly collapsed.

But the nightmare wasn’t over.

Vanessa slowly reached into her handbag and placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a teenage boy with Noah’s blue eyes, my husband’s dark hair, and a familiar crooked smile.

My son.

The baby I’d never known existed.

On the back, someone had written:

I found you, Mom. I know what they did.

Then Vanessa looked toward the front door.

“There’s one more thing, Catherine.”

Her voice broke.

“Jonathan didn’t want me to come here alone.”

At that exact moment, the doorbell rang.

Noah ran to the window.

“Mom,” he whispered, “there’s a boy standing outside.”

I rushed to the door and opened it.

A teenage boy stood on my porch, clutching a worn blue baby blanket.

He looked so much like Noah that my knees nearly gave way.

“Are you Catherine Miller?” he asked.

I nodded, tears filling my eyes.

His lips trembled.

“I’m Jonathan.”

I reached toward him.

But he stepped back.

“Before you hug me, Mom, there’s something you need to see.”

He pulled a small flash drive from his pocket.

“It’s a recording of what Dad and Vanessa did last week.”

Then he looked over my shoulder at Richard.

“And Dad knows that if you watch it, someone’s going to prison.”

TO BE CONTINUED IN PART 3…

What was hidden on Jonathan’s flash drive? Why had Richard secretly given away one of his twin sons? And what would Catherine do when she discovered the real reason behind her husband’s Thanksgiving betrayal?
