My Son Refused to Pay for My Funeral—Then I Walked Into His Wedding
PART 2 — THE DOCUMENT THAT PROVED MY DEATH WAS PLANNED
“YOUR MOTHER’S DEATH CERTIFICATE WAS PREPARED ELEVEN DAYS BEFORE HER ACCIDENT.”
Those words echoed through the wedding ballroom.
Four hundred guests sat frozen as my son Daniel stared at the folder in Robert Mitchell’s hands.
My daughter-in-law-to-be, Victoria, suddenly grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Don’t say anything. We need a lawyer.”
I looked at my son.
“Daniel, why would someone prepare documents about my death while I was still alive?”
He swallowed.
“Mom, there’s been a misunderstanding.”
“A misunderstanding?” I whispered. “You refused to pay for my funeral. You tried to take my house. And now you’re telling me someone planned my death?”
Robert stepped forward.
“The document is a pre-filled death certificate worksheet. It isn’t an official death certificate, but it was created using Evelyn’s personal information eleven days before the crash.”
Victoria’s face turned white.
Daniel looked toward the ballroom exit.
Then Robert revealed another document.
“A week before the accident, Daniel purchased a two-million-dollar life insurance policy on his mother.”
My knees weakened.
I had never heard of such a policy.
“Daniel?” I whispered. “Why?”
He couldn’t look at me.
Victoria suddenly shouted, “BECAUSE WE NEEDED THE MONEY!”
The entire ballroom gasped.
She covered her mouth.
But it was too late.
Robert calmly asked, “What money, Victoria?”
She began crying.
“Daniel’s investment company was collapsing. He owed nearly three million dollars. If he didn’t repay his investors, he was going to lose everything.”
I stared at my son.
“You could have asked me for help.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Help? You lived in a tiny house, wore secondhand clothes, and complained about grocery prices! How was I supposed to know Dad left you millions?”
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“You thought I was poor, so my life meant nothing to you?”
He said nothing.
Then Robert opened another envelope.
“Evelyn, there’s something you need to see.”
Inside was a photograph taken outside my house the morning of my accident.
My blue sedan was parked in the driveway.
Beside it stood a man wearing a mechanic’s uniform.
I recognized him immediately.
“That man came to check my brakes,” I whispered. “Daniel said he’d arranged a free safety inspection.”
Robert nodded.
“We located the service records. Your regular mechanic never sent anyone.”
My heart began pounding.
“What are you saying?”
“The police are investigating evidence that someone deliberately interfered with your vehicle.”
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
I turned toward Daniel.
“You arranged that inspection?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Mom, I swear I didn’t know what was going to happen.”
Victoria suddenly stepped away from him.
“Daniel, don’t you dare blame me!”
I looked between them.
“WHAT DID YOU TWO DO?”
Before either could answer, two detectives entered the ballroom.
One approached Robert.
“We have the additional records you requested.”
Daniel took another step toward the exit.
“I’m leaving.”
The detective raised his hand.
“Mr. Harper, we need to speak with you concerning your mother’s accident and several suspected financial crimes.”
Victoria began sobbing.
Then something unexpected happened.
A young woman in a black dress stood up from the back row.
“I can tell you who paid the man who worked on her car.”
Everyone turned.
She looked about twenty-five.
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
“Sarah? What are you doing here?”
The woman walked slowly toward us.
“My name is Sarah Collins. I used to work as Daniel’s executive assistant.”
She looked at me.
“Mrs. Harper, I tried to warn you before your accident.”
My breath caught.
“What?”
“I called your house three times, but Daniel told me you were staying with relatives.”
She pulled out her phone.
“I have emails, payment records, and a recording from his office.”
Daniel suddenly shouted, “SHE’S LYING! I FIRED HER FOR STEALING!”
Sarah didn’t flinch.
“You fired me because I refused to delete the files.”
She handed her phone to the detective.
Then she looked directly at Victoria.
“And you should know something else.”
Victoria’s lips trembled.
“What?”
Sarah took a deep breath.
“Daniel wasn’t planning to marry you after he collected the insurance money.”
The room fell silent.
“He had already arranged to leave the country with another woman.”
Victoria stared at Daniel.
“You told me we were starting over together!”
Sarah shook her head.
“He was planning to leave you with the debts and the forged documents.”
For the first time, Victoria looked genuinely terrified.
Then she opened her handbag and pulled out a small USB drive.
“Fine,” she whispered. “If I’m going down, Daniel isn’t escaping either.”
She handed it to the detective.
“This contains the security footage from his office.”
Daniel’s face drained of color.
Robert looked toward me.
“Evelyn, I think we finally have enough to understand what happened.”
But Victoria suddenly grabbed my hand.
“Mrs. Harper, before they take him away, there’s something else you deserve to know.”
I pulled back.
“What could possibly be worse?”
She began trembling.
“Your husband didn’t leave four million dollars in that trust by accident.”
I stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
Victoria looked toward Daniel.
“He discovered something about his son’s finances before he died. That’s why he protected the money.”
My heart pounded.
Robert slowly opened the final envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter from my husband, dated just three days before his death.
I recognized his handwriting immediately.
My dearest Evelyn,
If anything happens to me, please do not trust Daniel with our family’s money.
I have discovered what he’s been doing, and I’m afraid he may never forgive me for stopping him.
Tears blurred my vision.
My husband had died twenty years ago.
Daniel had been only twelve.
I looked up at Robert.
“How could Thomas have written this about a twelve-year-old boy?”
Robert’s face went pale.
Then he turned the envelope over.
On the back was a second name.
Daniel Harper Sr.
I stared at the words.
My late husband’s name was Thomas.
My son’s name was Daniel.
And suddenly, I realized the letter wasn’t referring to my son at all.
Robert whispered, “Evelyn, there’s something about your husband’s first family that he never told you.”
The detective looked down at the newly recovered records.
Then he asked a question that made the entire ballroom fall silent.
“Mrs. Harper, did you know your husband had an older son?”
