PART 2: THE SECRET BENEATH THE SNOW

PART 2: THE SECRET BENEATH THE SNOW
The following morning, Lydia discovered an old photograph hidden inside Gideon’s desk. It showed a beautiful young woman standing beside him, smiling beneath the summer sun.
On the back were four words: You were always innocent.
Before Lydia could ask about it, three riders appeared outside the cabin.
Their leader introduced himself as Sheriff Dawson.
“We’re looking for Gideon Hayes,” he announced. “There’s unfinished business concerning his first wife’s death.”
Gideon stepped outside, his expression turning cold.
Lydia watched from the doorway as the sheriff accused him of abandoning his first wife during a winter storm.
But Gideon finally revealed the truth.
His wife had been caught beneath a collapsing roof during a blizzard. He had desperately tried to save her, suffering the scars on his hands in the process. Her wealthy family had blamed him because he was a poor mountain trapper.
The sheriff produced a sealed letter.
It was written by Gideon’s first wife before she died.
Inside, she had confessed that the accident was nobody’s fault and begged her family to stop destroying the man she loved.
Gideon’s shoulders shook as he read it.
Lydia stepped beside him and gently wrapped her arms around his waist.
“You don’t have to carry this alone anymore.”
That night, Gideon placed an extra blanket beside the bed.
“May I sit with you?” he asked.
Lydia smiled and lifted the covers.
“Only if you promise to stay.”
For the first time in five years, Gideon slept beside someone without fear.
And as winter slowly surrendered to spring, the lonely mountain cabin became a home filled with laughter, warmth, and a love neither had believed possible.
