Twin Brothers Jailed After a Meaningless After-School Dispute Ends in Tragedy

Two teenage twins have been sentenced following the loss of a 16-year-old boy after a serious altercation that took place after school in Luton.

Ashraf Habimana, who was not part of the earlier dispute, was with friends in a car park at around 7pm on September 29 when two groups of young people confronted one another.

Among those involved were twin brothers Athif and Althaf Hussaindeen, both now 18.

Police say an earlier disagreement had taken place that afternoon, which later escalated as more teenagers arrived at the scene. CCTV footage showed Ashraf being physically attacked during the confrontation. He was later taken to hospital, where he sadly passed away.

Footage also showed another 16-year-old being seriously injured during the same incident but surviving.

The twins left the area but were later located, arrested, and charged by Bedfordshire Police.

Following a trial, Athif Hussaindeen was found guilty of the most serious offence, as well as additional public order and weapons-related charges. He received a life sentence and will serve a minimum of 24 years.

Althaf Hussaindeen was found guilty of a lesser offence and public disorder, and was sentenced to seven years.

At sentencing, the judge noted that Ashraf was unarmed and attempted to leave the area, playing no active role in the confrontation.

In a statement, Ashraf’s parents spoke of their deep heartbreak and described their son as loving, calm, and full of promise. They announced the creation of the Ashraf Habimana Foundation, aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of youth violence. Their message is clear: “Don’t destroy a life. Destroy the weapon.”

Additional individuals connected to the incident have also received sentences related to public disorder and weapons possession.

Detective Inspector Graham Newton described the case as a tragic example of how quickly situations can escalate, particularly when fueled by social media. He emphasized the lasting impact such actions have on families, communities, and young lives.
