A key deadline is approaching for people who may be owed money after errors in past State Pension payments, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The review mainly affects people who reached State Pension age before April 2016 — particularly women born in the 1950s, as well as some widows and older pensioners whose payments were not automatically updated.

The DWP has previously confirmed that tens of thousands of people were underpaid, with average back payments estimated at around £2,950, although individual amounts can be higher or lower depending on personal circumstances.

Campaigners are urging anyone who believes they may be affected to check their entitlement before the current review process comes to an end, warning that many eligible people may still be unaware they are owed money.

The DWP says it is continuing to correct historic errors, but families and pension groups stress that taking action now could be crucial for those who have not yet been contacted.
