Ilia Malinin made Olympic history with a backflip that was banned for 50 years

At the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Ilia Malinin became the focus when she performed a backflip – a move that was once considered too dangerous and banned for nearly half a century.

At the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Ilia Malinin stunned the entire ice rink by performing a backflip, a move that has been banned for nearly half a century because of its dangerous level. Only in 2024 will the International Skating Federation allow it to be brought back.

Although it did not bring technical points, Malinin’s jump immediately heated up the stands. Many spectators jumped up and cheered, including Novak Djokovic, who was said to be “surprised” when he saw him land safely.

This achievement makes Malinin the first athlete since 1976 to perform a valid backflip at the Olympics, following the performance of Terry Kubicka. More notably, he was also the first person in history to land with a sliding blade, a standard that no one has ever reached.
