12-Year-Old Girl Fighting for Her Life After Tragic School Incident Shocks Small Canadian Community

A gravely injured 12-year-old student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia is fighting for her life after being harmed during a violent incident — in what authorities describe as Canada’s deadliest school tragedy in decades.

Maya Edmonds was one of at least 25 people hurt during the chaos when an individual carried out an attack at the school in the close-knit community of Tumbler Ridge on Tuesday, leaving her with critical injuries to her head and neck, her mom said.

“Today started as any other. Now, however, my 12-year-old daughter is fighting for her life while doctors try to repair the damage to her head and neck,” Maya’s heartbroken mother, Cia, wrote on Facebook.

“This doesn’t even feel real … I never thought I would be asking for prayers, but please, pray for my baby.”

The tragedy — described as the third deadliest large-scale attack in Canada’s history and the deadliest school-related incident in almost four decades — unfolded Tuesday in the western province, in a small rural community about 415 miles from Vancouver.

Seven people lost their lives at the high school, and two others were discovered at a nearby home, which authorities believe may be connected to the incident.

Police have identified the individual involved only as a female suspect and described her appearance, but no name or age has been confirmed, and the motive remains unclear.

The suspect was later found unresponsive inside the school, authorities said.

Maya is in critical care at Vancouver Children’s Hospital, her aunt, Krysta, wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to support the family, noting that the girl’s recovery timeline is unknown.

So far, the fundraiser has raised over $37,000 of its $45,000 goal.

“This support will help Maya through her recovery and allow Cia to remain by her side without financial worry,” Krysta wrote.

“We will provide updates as they come. We couldn’t do it without your support.”
