A 21-year-old man died following an incident involving federal protection officers after entering a restricted area at a private resort in Palm Beach, Florida, prompting a federal investigation.

Austin Tucker Martin, who had reportedly been missing according to family members, passed away after driving onto the property during the early hours of Sunday.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time when Martin drove through the north gate as another vehicle was exiting.

According to law enforcement officials, Martin was carrying a long firearm and a fuel container when he entered the restricted zone.

Officers instructed him to drop the items. Authorities stated that when he failed to comply and made a threatening movement, officers discharged their service weapons to stop the perceived threat.

Martin was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during the encounter.

Officials later said he had been reported missing by his family in North Carolina days earlier. Investigators believe he travelled south and obtained the firearm during the trip. The packaging for the weapon was reportedly found inside his vehicle.

Federal authorities are leading the investigation, working alongside protective services and local law enforcement. Officials are reviewing Martin’s background, movements and possible motive, which remains unclear.
