At 95, Grandmother Salbiah Continues to Walk Alone Through Life, Holding Onto Hope

At an age when most people are surrounded by family and care, 95-year-old Salbiah continues to face life on her own.

Her body is frail and bent with age, yet every day she pushes herself forward. For the past 15 years, she has been living with a large tumor growing on her neck—one that has gradually increased in size, making it harder for her to breathe and swallow.

At first, she believed it was just a minor swelling. But when it didn’t go away, she went to the hospital and learned the truth. Since then, without access to proper treatment, she has endured the discomfort in silence.

After her husband passed away decades ago, Salbiah has lived alone in an aging house that has slowly fallen into disrepair. With no one by her side, she has had to rely entirely on herself to survive.

Each day, despite her condition, she walks long distances—sometimes up to 15 kilometers—selling small bundles of broomsticks. Each bundle earns only a modest amount, yet it is all she depends on for food.

Even when her body feels exhausted and the pain becomes difficult to bear, she continues step by step along the roadside, holding on to the hope of making it through another day.

There are moments when fatigue overtakes her. She has been seen resting quietly by the side of shops, gathering strength before continuing her journey. The discomfort from her condition often makes simple things difficult, but she endures it with quiet resilience.

At times, misunderstandings from others have made her journey even harder. Some people have mistaken her for a beggar, not realizing that she is working to earn an honest living.

Now, even eating has become a challenge. As the tumor has grown, swallowing food is no longer easy. She manages by softening her meals, taking small bites just to get through the day.

Yet through it all, Salbiah has never lost her faith.
