TUMBLER RIDGE UPDATE: MAYA GEBALA’S LATEST SURGERY POSTPONED, SAYS MOM

Maya Gebala, a 12-year-old survivor of the tragic Tumbler Ridge school incident, is continuing her fight for life in hospital. She was scheduled to undergo another surgery on Saturday, but it had to be postponed after doctors discovered a complication in her brain, her mother shared on social media.
Maya is currently in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit at B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver after sustaining critical injuries during the Feb. 10 incident involving 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar.

She was one of two students airlifted to hospital following the tragedy, which left multiple people dead and many others injured.
According to an update on the family’s GoFundMe page, Maya was expected to undergo a fourth procedure to reconstruct part of her skull.

“Today’s surgery to help restore her skull couldn’t go ahead,” her mother shared. She explained that a complication in the center of Maya’s brain needed immediate attention. Early signs suggest it may not be a severe infection, but it remains a serious setback in her recovery.
“I have never felt so hopeful, yet so heartbroken at the same time,” she wrote.

In another update, Maya’s mother described the past weeks as overwhelming, filled with constant ups and downs, including infections and multiple surgeries. Despite everything, Maya has shown incredible resilience — she has responded physically, coughed, and even regained limited vision in one eye.
She still has no movement on her right side, cannot speak, and faces difficulty swallowing. However, her mother believes Maya is continuing to fight with everything she has.

“She’s trying to move, reacting to pain, adjusting her position. She’s even begun turning her head — something new,” her mom shared, adding that Maya often reaches toward her head as if aware of the pain, while she reassures her that things will get better.
Maya was injured while trying to shield her classmates. She was in the school library at the time, and according to her family, showed remarkable courage and selflessness beyond her years.

In the aftermath, a classmate noticed slight movement and alerted first responders, helping ensure Maya received urgent care before being airlifted to hospital.
