WEIGHING JUST 1 POUND, BARRETT HAS SPENT OVER A YEAR BATTLING BRONCHOPULMONARY DYSPLASIA — AND HIS STRENGTH CONTINUES TO AMAZE

Barrett Brasfield, a baby boy from Homewood, has shown incredible strength from the very beginning of his life.
Born on June 6, 2024, Barrett entered the world weighing just 1 pound, 1 ounce — so small that his survival was uncertain. From his first breath, he faced a long and difficult journey.

Shortly after birth, Barrett was diagnosed with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, a chronic lung condition that often affects premature babies and can lead to lasting complications in breathing due to lung scarring.
What followed was nearly a year of constant care, hope, and resilience.

Barrett spent a total of 403 days in the hospital, including nine months at UAB Hospital in Birmingham before being transferred to Children’s of Alabama for continued treatment. Throughout that time, he was surrounded by doctors, machines, and a family that never left his side.
Despite the many challenges, Barrett continued to fight.

“Barrett had no problem putting on weight, but his lungs have been an issue,” his mother, Carli, shared — a reminder of the ongoing battle he faces every single day.
For his family, the journey has been both exhausting and emotional, filled with moments of fear but also quiet victories.

“There were days we didn’t know what tomorrow would look like,” Carli said. “But Barrett kept showing us he wasn’t ready to give up.”
His strength became their strength.

“Every small step forward felt like a miracle,” a family member added. “He’s been fighting since day one, and he continues to inspire us all.”
After more than a year in medical care, Barrett’s story is one of courage, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between a child and his family.

Though his journey is not over and his lungs still require close monitoring, Barrett has already overcome challenges many thought impossible.
