AMNIOTIC BAND SYNDROME LEFT BABY AMALIA FACING MULTIPLE CHALLENGES — BUT HER JOURNEY IS POWERED BY A MOTHER’S UNBREAKABLE LOVE

The gift of life is often described as a blessing — but for some families, it also comes with challenges that test their strength in unimaginable ways.

For 26-year-old Melissa “Missy” Andreniuk, a single mother of two, that reality became clear when she learned her unborn daughter would face serious medical complications before even entering the world.

Missy was already raising her 8-year-old son, Gunnar — a bright, loving boy who enjoys video games, science, and dreams of becoming like his cousin, a police officer. When baby Amalia came into their lives, Gunnar quickly stepped into his role as a proud and protective big brother.

But Amalia’s journey began long before her first breath.

At just 19 weeks of pregnancy, she was diagnosed with amniotic band syndrome, a rare condition in which fibrous bands inside the womb can attach to the developing baby and affect growth. Determined to give her daughter every chance, Missy traveled five hours to Tampa, Florida, where doctors performed a delicate prenatal surgery at 21 weeks to remove the bands.

The procedure was successful — but the road ahead remained uncertain.

Amalia was born prematurely at 29 weeks, weighing only 3 pounds 6 ounces. The effects of the condition were severe: she was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, partial hearing loss, and her left eye did not fully develop.

She spent her first 44 days in the NICU, fighting quietly but bravely.

“It was the hardest time of my life,” Missy shared. “Seeing her so small, connected to so many machines… but she never stopped fighting.”

Since then, Amalia’s life has been filled with constant medical care. The closest hospital equipped to treat her complex needs is hours away, requiring an 8-hour round trip for every appointment, surgery, or check-up.

Missy now makes that journey three to four times a month.

The demands of Amalia’s care forced her to stop working, placing even more pressure on the family’s already difficult financial situation. Yet through it all, Missy continues to push forward with unwavering determination.

“I don’t know how we would have made it without the kindness of others,” she said. “Every bit of support has helped us keep going.”

At just a few months old, Amalia has already undergone her first major surgery — a complex procedure that included lip repair, eyelid work, and the placement of ear tubes to help with her hearing.

Originally expected to take four hours, the surgery lasted seven.

“She was a rockstar,” Missy said. “Stronger than anyone could imagine.”

Recovery was not easy. Like any baby, Amalia wanted to touch her face, often trying to remove her dressings despite the discomfort. But even through the challenges, she continued to show remarkable resilience.

Doctors have been encouraged by her progress.

Now, Amalia is preparing for her second surgery, which will continue repairing her lip and support the development of her eye. Her medical team hopes that, with a series of procedures, they can significantly improve her condition and quality of life.

Despite everything she has endured, Amalia is thriving.

She has grown from a fragile newborn into a lively baby nearing 13 pounds — full of personality, determination, and spirit.

“She knows exactly what she wants,” Missy said with a smile. “And she’s not afraid to let us know.”

Her brother Gunnar remains her biggest supporter, always by her side, proud of the little sister who inspires everyone around her.

“She’s our miracle,” Missy shared. “Every day, she shows us what strength really looks like.”
