The New York Encounter to Two Decades of Marriage: The Journey of Donald and Melania

The story of Donald and Melania Trump began in September 1998 during the vibrant atmosphere of New York Fashion Week. The pair met at the Kit Kat Club in Manhattan at a party hosted by their mutual friend, Paolo Zampolli. Reflecting on that night in a 2015 interview with Barbara Walters, Melania described Donald as very charming, noting an immediate “sparkle” and chemistry between them. Interestingly, because Donald had arrived at the party with a date, Melania initially refused to give him her phone number. Instead, she insisted that he provide his number to her, promising to be the one to call. Despite Donald’s reputation at the time as a “lady’s man,” Melania noted that their connection was instant and enduring, a sentiment Donald echoed in the same interview.

The couple eventually wed on January 22, 2005, at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida. Their wedding reception was a grand affair held in the Mar-a-Lago ballroom, which Melania had meticulously planned alongside renowned designer Preston Bailey. Both described the day as fantastic, with Donald later telling Larry King that the couple was highly compatible and rarely, if ever, argued. Their family grew on March 20, 2006, with the birth of their son, Barron William Trump. In a collaborative naming effort, Donald chose “Barron” while Melania selected “William.” Following the family tradition, Barron was baptized at the same Palm Beach church where his parents were married.

Melania, who became a United States citizen in July 2006, took a very hands-on approach to motherhood, choosing to raise Barron herself without the constant aid of nannies. Their partnership has remained a focal point of their public lives for over twenty years. On January 22, 2025, Donald publicly celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary, praising Melania as a beautiful wife and an incredible First Lady. Most recently, on April 28, 2026, the couple hosted a prestigious state dinner at the White House for King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Melania personally directed the preparations for the event, which marked the first white-tie state dinner held at the White
