A SEVERE RESPIRATORY INFECTION LEFT 8-MONTH-OLD LUCA FIGHTING FOR EVERY BREATH — AND HIS COURAGE IS UNFORGETTABLE

Eight-month-old Luca Bennett had always been a cheerful baby, filling his family’s home with laughter and energy — until one terrifying night changed everything.
What started as a quick visit to Southend Hospital quickly became every parent’s worst nightmare.
Luca’s mother, Emily Bennett, said her son suddenly became seriously ill after developing a severe respiratory infection that made it difficult for him to breathe. Doctors rushed him straight to the children’s ward, where nurses placed him on an opti-flow machine to help stabilize his oxygen levels.

But as the hours passed, Luca’s condition continued to worsen.
Doctors inserted cannulas into his tiny hands while closely monitoring him through the night. Emily and her partner, Robbie, watched helplessly as their baby struggled for every breath.
“The doctors told us they needed to sedate and ventilate him,” Emily recalled. “The moment I heard those words, my heart completely shattered.”
Medical staff and the specialist PANDR ambulance team soon made the urgent decision to transfer Luca to the Royal London Hospital for intensive care treatment.
“I remember kissing his forehead before they moved him,” Emily said. “I kept whispering, ‘Please keep fighting, baby boy. Mummy’s right here.’”

Once at the Royal London Hospital, Luca was admitted directly to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Surrounded by machines, wires, and tubes, the tiny baby lay connected to a ventilator that was now helping him breathe.
“Seeing him like that was unbearable,” Robbie shared. “You feel so helpless as a parent. All we wanted was to hold him and tell him everything would be okay.”
The sudden emergency left the couple completely unprepared. They arrived at the hospital with no clothes, toiletries, or personal belongings, focused only on staying close to their son.
That was when hospital staff introduced them to Stevenson House, a “Home from Home” provided by The Sick Children’s Trust for families with critically ill children.

The support became a lifeline during the darkest days of their lives.
“We had never heard of the charity before,” Emily explained. “But walking into that room after everything we’d been through felt like someone finally gave us a moment to breathe.”
Despite the fear and exhaustion, Luca continued fighting.
“He’s the bravest little boy,” Emily said. “Even on the hardest days, we held onto hope because we knew our son was still fighting with everything he had.”
