‘I’D STAY HERE EVERY NIGHT IF IT HELPS HER FEEL SAFE’: MOTHER REFUSES TO LEAVE HOSPITAL BEDSIDE AS FIVE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER BATTLES RARE IMMUNE DISORDER

Every night, while most parents tuck their children into bed at home, Amelia Carter pulls a chair beside a hospital bed and prepares for another sleepless night beside her five-year-old daughter, Sophie.

The little girl has been battling a rare immune condition known as Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) — a disorder that leaves the body dangerously vulnerable to infections and illness.

For months, Sophie’s childhood has been replaced by hospital rooms, blood tests, medications, and exhausting treatments as doctors work to stabilize her fragile immune system.

But through every frightening moment, one thing has remained constant: her mother’s hand wrapped tightly around hers.

Even on the days Sophie becomes too weak to talk, Amelia says her daughter still reaches for her before falling asleep.

“She just wants to know I’m there,” Amelia shared quietly. “I haven’t slept much, but I would stay beside her every night if it helps her feel safe.”

Photos from inside the hospital show the emotional reality of their journey — a tired mother watching over her daughter while machines beep softly in the background.

Family members say Amelia rarely leaves Sophie’s side, often staying awake through the night to comfort her during painful treatments and difficult moments.

Despite everything she has endured, Sophie continues to show incredible courage that has deeply moved hospital staff.

“She’s such a gentle little soul,” one relative said. “Even when she feels awful, she still tries to smile at people.”

Doctors remain hopeful as Sophie continues receiving treatment, though the road ahead is expected to be long.

For Amelia, however, the focus remains simple.

“As long as she keeps fighting,” she said, “I’ll keep fighting right beside her.”

And each night, beneath the bright hospital lights, a little girl still falls asleep holding the hand of the person who makes her feel safest in the world.
